Yes, we had the cabinet builders create a base to which we attached 1-1/8 inch plywood to give the table which has very large overhangs some stability (they have kids that like to climb on things!). The plywood is not seen because it is actually recessed into the walnut butcher block top ... it is an amazing table, seating 10 comfortably.
