the library of dust - At the former Oregon State Insane Asylum, between 1883 and the 1970's, thousands of people died while they were in the hospital. If a person's body was not claimed by their families, their cremated ashes were sealed in a labeled cannister and stored on rows of shelves at the hospital. via @TerryPrince

In Japan, they have funeral, but they are put on in a different way. The night before the close relatives hold a very special ceremony called, ‘ Otsuya’, to say goodbye to the body. candles and intents are burned and the relative stay awake all through the night, with the belief that the dead may wake up. Monks visit the deceased to pray and give the person a ‘Buddhist name’. The body is cremated. After the cremation each relative picks up a bone with chopsticks and places it in a white pottery jar. This is the Japanese’s way of showing that the body has not been forgotten. The most special bone is the one from the voice box, because it is the shape of Buddha sitting in prayer. After 49 days the bones are placed in a gravestone at the cemetary.
