In this lesson, students will explore the collaborative work of David and Roberta Williamson. Through examples of the Williamsons’ found object jewelry, three concepts are explored: collaboration, juxtaposition and personal adornment. After participating in investigations dealing with associations and meanings of objects, students will create a piece of jewelry combining a number of found objects that evoke a story or emotion.

Up Close and Personal What makes craft artists who they are? Now you can discover how they think; what they do; and how craft is a part of their lives. Simply click on any of the dozens of short videos listed here, where you can see and hear the artists in their own words, often in their own studios. Let their inspirations be yours, too.

A fragment is, by definition, a small piece of some larger whole. In this section of Educator Guide: Memory, teachers will help students develop an understanding of how selected craft artists work with the notion of fragments and then guide them through a variety of inquiry-based explorations. By working with the notion of fragments themselves, students will deepen their knowledge and understanding and gain greater insight into this important aspect of craft in America.
In this lesson, students will view the jewelry and sculptural forms of Thomas Mann. Students will consider how Mann produces his work, and how he goes about transmitting messages in his work. Through a collaborative activity, students will create a design vocabulary upon which all students can draw in order to create a sculptural form that transmits a personal message

In this lesson, students will study the sculpted beadwork of artist Joyce J. Scott. Students will watch the Messages segment, featuring Scott, from the Craft In America DVD or online. The class will examine how Scott draws viewers to her work by making her pieces beautiful, with the hope that viewers will then consider the serious issues of race, class, and gender discrimination presented within the pieces. Students will consider these issues through Scott’s work. Finally, students will determine a point of view and invent a piece with an attractive surface appeal and an underlying serious topic.
In this lesson, students will learn about the artist Lisa Sorrell, her work as a boot maker, and the process of making leather cowboy boots by hand. Students will gain insight on how a family can contribute to the rich and purposeful life of the craftsperson. The studio portion of the "Instructional Strategies" is designed to give students the opportunity to craft a custom foot covering. These products can be prototypes, or fully realized handcrafted functional objects, depending upon time and resources.

Here is my tutorial on creating an interesting and unusual background to embroider onto. The non-woven fabric is made up of threads and wallpaper paste, but could also include small pieces of fabric. It can be used in 2D or 3D projects. It is a technique I picked up from the book "The Art of Embroidery" by Francoise Tellier-Loumagne and have adapted it and simplified it for my own work.
