Marc Chagall was born in 1887 to a poor Jewish family in Russia, the eldest of nine children. Chagall's work has been described as haunting, exuberant, and poetic. He created perhaps his most vital work on the eve of World War I, developing his own style of modern art based on visions of Eastern European Jewish folk culture.
