My Romanian roots run deep. I was born in Romania and bred in Alabama. I guess that makes me a globalized mutt with love for fried chicken and homemade plum brandy.
Cercul Fotopoetilor Disparuti. Fascinating photo poetry.
The enchanting artwork of Nicolae Tonitza.

Anthropologie Sept. catalog filmed in Romania. Our September heroine is back in some Romanian village, where she's clearly out of place, too overdressed for her surroundings and five inches taller than the locals. Is she in a witness protection program? If so, it's not a very good disguise. She also has a clone-looking friend (sister?) who shows up in some of the photos. Together, they both have the appearance of being genetically engineered, advanced human specimens.

Romanian Point Lace Lace as a general category can be traced back to its earliest beginnings as knotted nets. Other forms have evolved over time from whitework techniques such as cutwork or drawn work, and from early forms of darn-netting. As more intricate patterns and techniques evolved, owning lace became a status symbol for the wealthy.

In addition to being the creators of striking social and spiritual artworks, which they sometimes display on mountain-tops, among trees, and amidst other natural landscapes, Marian and Victoria Zidaru are the most visible figures of a revivalist, apocalyptic, charismatic Orthodox Christian movement that sees itself as today’s Israel and holds Romania to be the site of the spiritual renewal of humanity through the Word of God. The earthly source of the New Jerusalem movement was a woman known as Saint Virginia (1923-1980), or diminutively St. Verginica, a devoutly religious seer who lived in the town of Pucioasa, near Târgovişte, a small historic city located two hours away from Bucharest.

The architectural allure of Bucharest. Patrick and I fondly describe it as "dirty pretty" or "pretty broken"- it suits our taste for the slightly dishevelled and worn.

The old peasant did not surround himself with too many things, shiny and dead. His objects were few, never only decorative, impersonal or inorganic. His hands were torturing the rough material, ennobling it through suffering. The hemp spun yarn, the wood, and the wheat end in the martyr object. Stories say that any apparently humble house, any domestic object has the power to save you from death. In extraordinary conditions the lance, the hood and the pipe of the young shepherd, the foreigner, whose name the song doesn’t mention, watch the death of the master left to their holy guard. Tragic happenings awaken the energy of peasant objects. Unsuspected power is born from profane appearances. A living museum, conceived against dead things, must confess to these old meanings without words.

A different kind of revolution in Romania- the ones with outdoor seating.
The upper course of Ialomiţa River was praised by famous Romanian writers; the old Ialomiţa, the axis of the settlement in this area, has is spring in the Bucegi Mountains at the foot of Omu Peak, being the cradle of life and beauty of this land, even from the Dacian times and of those before them. The supreme god of the Dacians was Zalmoxis, who withdrew for three years in a cave on the holy mountain Kogaion; after his disappearance, he was considered dead and mourned by his people, but in the fourth year he returned, episode that some considered to be a resurrection, thus it was a parallel to Jesus Christ's resurrection. It is said that the cave of Zalmoxis is the Ialomicioara Cave.

On the holy peninsula of Mount Athos, monks chant "Christos anesti — Christ is risen" during a midnight vigil. This Easter gathering ends seven weeks of solemn fasting. Monks rise to pray during the quietest hours of the night because that is when they believe the heart is most open.
