Cut wood to fit your staircase risers and then paint & stencil to your heart's content. Glue them on afterwards in the order you'd like and voila! -- much easier than stenciling in place on the stairs!

Judith van Praag Anastasia, Didn't see the link for the rug on my iPhone, now that I've seen the beauty of Catherine's patchwork series on FB I love it! The rusty couch will look great on that ocean of colors which are picked up in the view outside your window. When I read *carpet* I thought wall to wall turquoise :-) therefore my earlier response. Go for it and use both in good health!
