Fibromyalgia

I have fibromyalgia - a central sensitization disorder of the nervous system that involves lots of pain, sleep disturbances, and a whole bunch of weird symptoms that come and go - but I'm determined to focus on techniques to manage it ... and participate in life as fully as possible. One of the absolute best ways to cope with this disorder is to make fun of it and laugh about it every chance I get!

Calcium Citrate is more easily absorbed that Calcium Oxide or Carbonate. 1000 mg/day. Calcium is important for normal nerve transmission. NOTE: Magnesium can cause diarrhea, and Calcium can cause constipation. Taking these two supplements together should cancel out those side-effects.

Magnesium for Fibromyalgia: 500mg a day. Glycinate, Citrate or Maleate (not Oxide). Magnesium relaxes the muscles to prevent spasms and cramping, and along with Malic Acid, it aids in ATP (energy) production.

Malic Acid plays a key role in the production of ATP, the energy source for all cells. Patients with fibromyalgia have low muscle-tissue oxygen pressure, muscle tissue breakdown and mitochondrial damage. Malic acid can reverse these negative effects and reduce fatigue as it increases energy production. 1200-2400mg/day (I take 1500mg daily) along with magnesium & calcium.

My Neurologist's website (Dr. John Harney) - links to the Doctor Handouts page. He gave me nearly 20 of these documents to read as homework between my first and second appointments. Education is key to treating fibromyalgia!

Trigger Point Dry Needling (TDN) aka: Intramuscular Manual Therapy. Small, thin needles are inserted in the muscles at the trigger points causing the pain referral. The muscles then contract and release, improving flexibility of the muscle and decreasing symptoms. (I see a physical therapist 1-2x a week, and dry needling is one of the treatment methods she uses that works extremely well for me.)

The 18 Fibromyalgia trigger points. To be diagnosed with FMS, you must have had at least 3 months of widespread pain, and pain and tenderness in at least 11 of 18 areas. (I am 18 for 18.)
