Ballet. It’s not all bun-heads and sequins, puffed tulle and fairy wings. Sure, the onstage costume-side of operations is dreamy and magical and helps transport dancers and audience members to another world, but there’s another side to dressing up that dancers put just as much thought into: what on earth do you wear day-to-day when your office is a rehearsal studio?

Although the bun hairstyle is synonymous with ballet, it owes its origins to the women of Ancient Greece, who created a hairstyle now known as the Greek knot. A simple, low-lying bun knotted at the back of the neck, it was typically adorned with jewellery as a status symbol for wealthy Greek women.

That solo dancer leaping and twirling across a bare stage is Guillaume Côté, a principal dancer with the National Ballet of Canada. He put his own money and lots of fund-raising effort into creating the two-minute video, which captures the pure physicality of classical dance at its finest. Côté is used to making ballet look easy on stage, in works such as Sleeping Beauty and The Seagull, but he says he has long wanted to portray a dancer in "the zone" -- the mental space he or she must find before a performance to let the art shine through.
