Embroidered dress, English, c. 1774. Worn by descendants of Rev Thomas Hodges who married Mary Davies, born 1750 only daughter of Rev Henry Davies, in October 1783 at Eastington. The Hodges family had an unbroken lineage at Arlingham since the early 16th century. The dress must have been worn by Mary's daughter. This dress has a copy of the original bill dated 22 April 1774 and addressed to "Miss Davis" from "Jane Gadby & Co." It must have been worn by Mary Davies' mother (with a mistake in the spelling of her name). The invoice mentions ..."to seam the tambour" (probably to make up this dress out of the embroidered fabric), £ 2.2s.
