Christ on the cross and the scissor arches of Wells Cathedral. During the 14th century the central supports of the crossing (the junction of a Cathedral's four arms) were found to be sinking. In 1338 Bishop Ralph (stop sniggering at the back) of Salisbury decided to build internal scissor arches to support the weight. I don't know if he had any other bright ideas in his lifetime, but this must have been his best. Fast forward 670 years and Wells has a unique place among cathedrals in the UK.
