I adored being in our local Brownie pack when I was young. Not only could you learn skills (and end up with a whole sleeve of achievement badges) but could go on day and night camping trips with hiking & fires & tents & billy tea & singalongs. Brilliant!
St Kilda Road (1). "Cowabee" - Toorak Teachers College hostel. Pancakes for breakfast on Thursdays.
Gladstone Street, Maryborough. Second home in Maryborough. Seemed like a long walk to everything, but I was quite young...and short.
Lawson Street, Hamilton. The neighbours opposite. It was before I started school, but I still remember everything about the street and neighbourhood.
Lockington, northern Victoria. My childhood was spent here. Catching yabbies in irrigation channels, flat country for bike-riding, the wild excitement when the local swimming pool was built.
The Mews, Vermont. Hilly. Lots of trees and elderly neighbours. Views of the Dandenong Ranges.
Park Street, St Kilda West. Walking distance to the beach, Sunday market and foodie nirvana of Acland Street. City tram terminus opposite.
St Kilda Road (2). A historic photo of the mansion next door. The enormous old trees of the Blind Institute were the greenery outside my third floor flat. Trams on tap.
Lubeck, Victoria. Tiny town in the Wimmera. Not really any neighbours to watch.
Inkerman Street, Maryborough. I remember having school friends around to watch the first moon walk on a tiny black & white tv in the loungeroom.
""Stratton Heights" Alexandra Avenue, South Yarra. I had a funny little garden flat with odd curves and angles, and a bath in a cupboard.
Church Street, Brighton. The church across the street. The old mansion I had a flat at the back of was demolished and is now a small group of shops.
Poets Grove, Elwood. I lived under the stairs in this block, but had the biggest private courtyard.
Giffard Street, Williamstown. Our neighbours. A much newer house than ours.
Williamstown Botanic Gardens. In our street, just opposite the beach. Nowhere cooler in summer.
North Williamstown railway station. Across the park from our townhouse.
Nelson Street, Windsor. One of the few houses in the street. Off St Kilda Junction, next to the underpass.
Emmaline Street, Northcote. A neighbouring house. Lots of lovely Italians, concrete, grapevines and tomato plants. Enormous blocks in the heart of suburbia.
North Terrace, Clifton Hill. One of the neighbouring houses. Opposite Darling Gardens, with a panoramic view of the city.
Rose Street, Armadale. My first flat after Teachers College. 2 bedroom flat, 4 country girls, lots of parties.
George Street, East Melbourne. Studio flat with 12' ceilings. Fitzroy Gardens at the end of the street.
Dickens Street, Elwood. Bottom flat, sun room with piano, open fires, original tiles in bathroom.
Toorak Road West, South Yarra. Opposite Fawkner Park, round the corner from the Botanic Gardens.
