John Toniolo (standing) and Jeff Harting chose Shaker-style cabinets with contemporary hardware for the kitchen. A sleek faucet and stainless steel farmhouse sink—along with the bold floor-to-ceiling subway tiles—are subtle reminders that this house is a modern take on a traditional form.
The kitchen, which has Energy Star appliances and a system of stainless steel cabinets from WPA Chicago, is designed so husband and wife can cook at the same time without getting in each other’s way. The bar countertop and the Calligaris table and banquette in the dining nook are made of walnut.
The copper windows are original to the building.

The kitchen island becomes a dining table at the far end. The refrigerator and pantry are built into a white-painted wall of storage.
The front of the smaller building is visible out the kitchen windows.
Stainless steel kitchen cabinets extend into the living room, where they morph into storage, then continue out to the terrace to become a staging area for barbecues.

Designer Stephen Knollenberg used 39-inch ceramic tiles on the kitchen backsplash to mimic a wood floor. Leaning against it, antique forged-iron peels (once used to pull loaves of bread from ovens) add a rustic touch.
Sunlight streaming through clerestory windows brightens the kitchen, where white oak was stained a butterscotch color for easy care.

Natural light streams into the kitchen, where clean lines are accented with pops of color like orange chairs from Crate & Barrel and walls painted celery green. Lyra stools from Room & Board tuck under the counter.

Glass cabinets with high-gloss enamel from Copat USA were chosen for their ability to bounce light into adjacent rooms. Orange glasses from Bloomingdale’s provide splashes of bold color.

In the kitchen is an old cabinet that Lowe found at an estate sale. “I scrubbed it down, painted it with Ralph Lauren metallic paint, and then dipped the interior shelves in sort of a magenta red,” she says.

The DeGraces let their beloved vintage stove shine against the original metal cabinets, which they had electrostatically spray-painted.

Custom hickory cabinets were installed in the kitchen during the initial renovation. In the eating area, Handman paired a set of vintage Thonet chairs with the owners’ contemporary dining table.
