Now is the time to plant herbaceous peonies. Three tips to success with this lovely, fragrant, long-lived perennial: 1. Plant in full sun. Too much shade is the number one reason that peonies don’t flower; However, in warm climates, some afternoon shade will make the flowers last longer, allowing you to enjoy each bloom a few days more. 2. Plant with the buds (or “eyes”) just 1-2” below the soil surface. Planting too deeply is the number two reason that peonies don’t flower. Here’s one place where a bit of laziness is a good thing. 3. Plant early, middle, and late season varieties. Instead of just a week or so of those gorgeous flowers, you’ll enjoy several weeks. Look on the label or tag of the plants; it should state when that variety flowers. You should be able to find peonies at your local garden center, but if you are looking for something a bit more special or would prefer to mail-order, you can’t do better than peony-central, Klehm’s Song Sparrow Nursery. I apologize in advance for the indecision that will no doubt beset you as you browse their 142 fabulous varieties.
