A forest of high arches in the Chapel of the Nine Altars, at the east end of the abbey church. This chapel marks the height of the prosperity of Fountains Abbey in the early 13th century. The weight of the Early English stone vaulting threatened the fabric of the original chapel, and in the 1480s Abbot Darnton replaced the vaults with wooden roofs (now gone), and inserted the huge Perpendicular window in the east wall.

The impressive nave of the abbey church, now carpeted in grass and open to the sky. The nave is late Norman in style and 12 bays long. The interior was originally painted white, and the first seven bays (closest to the viewer) were enclosed to form a separate church for the lay brothers.

Remains of the once large and splendid infirmary hall, in the far east of the abbey complex. It was built over the Skell in Early English style. In the 14th century, small private cubicles and fireplaces added further comfort.
