Bill Gaines: Brown Ankle Boots, Circa 1992 These ankle boots were worn by Bill Gaines, the towering, eccentric MAD magazine founder and publisher. Gaines, who proudly said, "MAD's philosophy is, we must never stop reminding the reader of how little value they get for their money!" was a publishing legend; after his death 1992, these boots were bronzed by MAD editor John Ficarra, who is now the magazine's editor-in-chief.

Judy Garland and Cyd Charisse: Edwardian Button-Up Boots, 1940s Judy Garland, a child star-turned-movie icon enjoyed success in Meet Me in St. Louis about the time she wore these boots. Cyd Charisse, MGM's onetime principal dancer, was best known for Singin' in the Rain and Brigadoon. She shared the screen with Garland in 1946's The Harvey Girls. Ever budget-conscious, studio wardrobes often reused props and costumes in their movies. And this was his lunar overshoe. (It's not clear when these shoes were made, or for which mission.) The ones he famously wore on the Steve Allen Show (to sing to a hound dog in a tuxedo) were lent to him by producers for his appearance. Rudolf Nureyev: Ballet Slipper, 1960s Arguably the most important ballet dancer of the 20th century, Nureyev was a Soviet who defected to the West in 1961 and became the principal dancer for the Royal Ballet in London, most famously partnering with Margot Fonteyn. He died of AIDS-related illness in 1986.
