This model has both concave (curved inwards) and convex (curved outwards) lenses mounted on a moveable arm in front of a picture of an eye. A small lever below the eyeball can make the eye ‘long-sighted’ or ‘short sighted’. By using the correct spectacle lens, the image on a rear screen comes into focus. This is a teaching model from the Department of Natural Philosophy at the University of Aberdeen and was used to demonstrate the principles of lenses.

This exquisite model of the eye dates from the late eighteenth century and was used in the Department of Natural Philosophy at the University of Aberdeen for teaching optics. The lens at the front and a screen at the rear display the upside-down image as it appears on the retina of a real eye.
