AUTISM is known as a complex developmental disability. Experts believe that Autism presents itself during the first three years of a person's life. The condition is the result of a neurological disorder that has an effect on normal brain function, affecting development of the person's communication and social interaction skills. People with autism have issues with non-verbal communication, a wide range of social interactions, and activities that include an element of play and/or banter. ASPERGER syndrome is similar in some ways to autism -- another, more severe type of PDD (Pervasive Developmental Disorder -- there are some important differences. Children with Asperger syndrome typically function better than do those with autism. In addition, children with Asperger syndrome generally have normal intelligence and near-normal language development, although they may develop problems communicating as they get older. In terms of developmental disabilites, there is much more information regarding autism available. Therefore, I am dedicationing this board to autism. Please check my board, Advocacy ~ Clothing & More for items that are available for purchase.

Father speaks out and voice recordings of his autistic son being abused by his teacher and aide. To learn more and how you can help please click the link to this YouTube Video. Although I am a professional in the field of providing services to people with special needs, as a human being I am absolutley disgusted by what occured in this classroom. Parents remember you know your child the best. Be aware and keep speaking up until you are really heard and action takes place...it is your right!!

Joan Redd And invented by Michael Nesmith's mother (yes, the Monkees' Michael Nesmith - she made a fortune from the stuff and left it all to him!).
Coleen Uyehara I actually knew that. My husband is a huge Monkees fan.

Joan Redd Yes, I worked for years with adults with DD/dual diagnoses and I was constantly learning from them. I still think about them and it has been 15+ years since I've last worked with them.
Coleen Uyehara Yes, I constantly learn from my clients about them, me and the world.
Ecspecially when that person is your child with Autism!

Though he's never stated it publicly, it is likely that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has some form of mild Aspergers. His social cues and dizzying intellect would seem to point in that direction. However, he has created the most influential form of social media ever devised, a testament to the power of ideas and a firm dose of self esteem.

Nonverbal does not equal not thinking. I'm still a thinking, feeling person even if I don't communicate the way you think I should. So true for our non-verbal kiddos!

Autism Awareness; however, this could be for any type of disability, mental illness, medical issues, etc. Unfortunately this is true with so many disenfranchised groups of people of all types.

In early 2006, 12-year-old Joshua Littman, who has Asperger’s syndrome, interviewed his mother, Sarah, at StoryCorps. Their one-of-a-kind conversation covered everything from cockroaches to Sarah’s feelings about Joshua as a son.

Adriana Guerra I'm currently working on my masters in special Ed with concentration in autism studies. It is disgusting to hear teachers doing this- whether it's a special Ed student or reg Ed. It should not be happening!!
