Developmental Disabilites Videos

DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITY including AUTISM is a term to describe lifelong disabilities attributable to mental and/or physical impairments, manifested prior to age 18. It is not synonymous with "developmental delay" which is often a consequence of a temporary illness or trauma during childhood. The term is used most commonly to refer to disabilities affecting daily functioning in three or more of the following areas: capacity for independent living, economic self-sufficiency, learning, mobility, receptive and expressive language, self-care, and self-direction.This board is dedicated to developmental disabilities issues, information and some fun videos...I hope you take a look and enjoy!!!

"Autistic Girl Expresses Unimaginable Intelligence" Probably the most amazing video I've seen possibly ever. Goosebumps, tears, but speechless. Just... wow.

amargi . I love Carley! I used to follow her when I had facebook. She's a very lovely and inspirational young woman.

Jennie Davis Wow, what a beautiful family. Reminds me of a beautiful young man named Bradley Wolff here in Australia who had the same chance to finally speak and be heard through a computer. The heart and humour of both Carly and Bradley are a inspiration and reminder to all to find a way to give everyone a voice.

Would you call my child a retard? A video I made to explain how hurtful the word is. If you ever only re-pin one thing from this board, make it this.

Christy Zimmermann Really good advice!! It is extremely difficult to get away sometimes, but when we have been able, it was very helpful and makes us stronger as a couple and as paarents.

A group of students from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota produced a video promoting awareness of the derogatory use of the "r-word". "Spread the Word to End the Word" is a campaign started by the Special Olympics addressing this issue. Almost 1,300 St. Thomas students made their pledge to eliminate the use of the r-word from everyday speech and to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities. Make your pledge now at www.r-word.org. You have the power to make change...you have the power to spread the word to end the word.

The “r” Word. Don't use it!!! If you hear it speak up for those with developmental disabilities. Some people have mental retardation (intellectual disabilities). While mental retardation is not a bad word, when used to describe someone or something you think is bad or stupid it becomes another thoughtless hurtful word. People with intellectual and developmental disabilities are not bad. Their condition is not bad. The prejudice and discrimination to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities is BAD…and WRONG! Please stop using the word ‘retard’. It hurts individuals and families of those with disabilities.

People with Down syndrome make great employees, are honest and hardworking, have dreams and aspirations, and have more in common with you and I than we realize. Helping change these perceptions is the goal of the successful campaign from The National Down Syndrome Congress.

"Not Acceptable" is a powerful and compelling 30 second television PSA which gives voice to a variety of diverse communities each of whom expresses that it is not acceptable to call them by what were once common words, but are now recognized as offensive slurs. It culminates in actress and self-advocate Lauren Potter from "Glee" stating that it is not acceptable to use the word 'retard' and she and "Glee" co-star Jane Lynch make a call to action to stop using the word and to promote the acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and to make their pledge online at r-word.org. The PSA was launched by the Spread the Word to End the Word campaign, an on-going initiative from Special Olympics and Best Buddies to eradicate the derogatory use of the word "retard(ed)" from everyday use and promote the inclusion and acceptance of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The mother of Nolan, a young boy diagnosed with autism, found herself pleasantly surprised by what technology could do to help her son's development. Nolan's mom created a list of fun iPad apps that are also useful for learning social skills, fine motor skills, language and communication skills, sensory skills and others. This video highlights a few of her and Nolan's favorites, like Tom the Talking Cat, who repeats back out loud whatever you say -- just the way you said it -- so kids can hear themselves as they tell a story. "I love how he encourages my child to communicate and build his vocabulary," Nolan's mother said. A complete list of autism-friendly iPad apps can be found at BookroomReviews.com.
