disABLILITY & Understanding

DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITY is a term to describe lifelong disabilities attributable to mental and/or physical impairments, manifested prior to age 18. It is not synonymous with "developmental delay" which is often a consequence of a temporary illness or trauma during childhood. The term is used most commonly to refer to disabilities affecting daily functioning in three or more of the following areas: capacity for independent living, economic self-sufficiency, learning, mobility, receptive and expressive language, self-care, and self-direction. For twenty years of my career, I have worked with those with developmental disabilities (mostly adults). The clients that I had were older, medically involved, behaviorally and psychiatrically involved...I remain an advocated for developmentally disabled, older adults and mental health. I've seen so much discrimination and outright harrassement and rudeness that the best way I know to fight it is to inform others. Take a look at this board you may be surprised. Autism is on a separete board as there is much more information. However, some famous people remain here. Special equipment, sensory stimulation & other therapeutic items are on specific boards. If there are videos, some only display the description and the play symbol, but if you click on the play symbol it will play the video. Please check my board, Advocacy ~ Clothing for items that are available for purchase.

Coleen Uyehara I saw this and thought it was a GREAT idea.

Even if you are referring to yourself, using the term "retard" is degrading and offensive to people with disabilities. When you say something is "retarded" because you think it is stupid, thoughtless or careless, you are equating those negative stereotypical traits with people who have mental disabilities. Please stop and think the next time you are about to say something is "retarded", and try a different adjective. You'll benefit from improved vocabulary and character all at once! Thank you.

Nonverbal does not equal not thinking. I'm still a thinking, feeling person even if I don't communicate the way you think I should. So true for our non-verbal kiddos!

Coleen Uyehara Suellen, just one more thing, my neice and nephew work with children who are disabled and used to use the word retard like it is now, which seems harmeless; however, it made me angry. I maybe outspoken here, but I'm learning to do that verbally. But, I took all the courage that I could muster to tell them how I felt. Later, that year they both told me that they don't use either words anymore.

"Before his son Samuel was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, photojournalist Dan Habib rarely thought about the inclusion of people with disabilities. Now he thinks about inclusion every day. Shot and produced over four years, Habib’s award-winning documentary film, Including Samuel, chronicles the Habib family’s efforts to include Samuel in every facet of their lives. The film honestly portrays his family’s hopes and struggles as well as the experiences of four other individuals with disabilities and their families. Including Samuel is a highly personal, passionately photographed film that captures the cultural and systemic barriers to inclusion." www.includingsamu...

Coleen Uyehara Sally, no I don't mind at all. I'm grateful to have some company to back up my statements. I'll probably follow up with some of my own.

THIS IS NOT OKAY--This little girl is being denied a life-saving kidney transplant by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, even though her family can find her a donor on their own, solely because she is deemed "mentally retarded". She has the same syndrome as my son so this really hits close. -- Please read her story here, pass this along and let CHOP know how you feel about this on their FB page (www.facebook.com/...) and sign her petition: www.change.org/pe...

Sally Adebayo Coleen, thanks for sharing this.I'll spread it around. Here's the reason I posted for signing the petition..."I'm signing this petition because I was the sole care provider for my brother for the last 17 years of his life.He had mental retardation,a seizure disorder called Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, and finally colon cancer that took his life at the age of 53. Most of the specialists wrote him off. They thought his quality of life was poor because he could no longer talk and he slept quite a lot in his last few years.Luckily his doctor listened to what I had to say about who he was and what things he loved. When a person can experience joy their life is worth living. His wonderful doctor acknowledged ME as the expert on my brother and advocated for everything he needed. My brother lived a longer and happier life than any of the specialists predicted. Why don't you just ask Amelia's parents who Amelia is? Just because you don't understand what makes a life worthwhile doesn't mean you can decide that for someone else.I hope they sue your pants off."

Profile picture of Coleen Uyehara

Coleen Uyehara Thanks Sally I already contacted her via the petition. I worked with developmentally adults and children who had psychiatric and/or medical issues for almost 20 years. This is just not right!!!!!! She has the WRONG set of people for her medical team. I asked a physician once for a pap smear for my client who lived in a nursing home. He said, she doesn't need it she doesn't get out. I was furious and refrained from asking him if he could get cancer because he doen't "do" anything. Instead, I had the home change her doctor...what an a**hole. He probably did med-ical fraud.

Someone pinned one of my disabilities advocacy pin and changed the comment underneath to be derogatory. After commenting back and forth, he turned around. He said that he did a Goggle search on "retard" and was disgusted by what he saw. I did the same thing on YouTube, Google and Razzle and became angry, sad, digusted and sickened by my results. This has become such a part of our culture and needs to stop.

Meaning of the symbol: It's a positive alternative to the traditional "handicapped symbol", where the focus is person's differences and a wheelchair. Only a small portion of people utilizing services associated with the symbol use wheelchairs. People with such an array of conditions as muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, paralysis, down syndrome, autism, visual impairments, hearing impairments, Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and even natural age-related impairments should not all be grouped by such a stigmatizing symbol. The traditional symbol screams "Beware. Someone different parks here." or "Pity them and give them charity." That's one thing the symbol is not - a symbol of pity. One of Annie's greatest fears was that the meaning of our symbol would be related to charity, or the quest for a cure. It is of course a result of ignorance when people see our symbol and automatically ask "Where do I donate?" -- that's an ignorance we hope to change. And it's also the reason we attached it to a business, entrepreneurship, and products. It's a flat out statement if 3E Love is successful from a business perspective that people with disabilities can achieve things without a handout.

Elizabeth Oyler I absolutely adore the idea of this. However, I have to say that it looks like it would be a bit uncomfortable to actually wear.

This is about raising awareness and not about me. Using “retard” is like using the "N" word or "fag” or any other racial slur." There is no difference. They are used as a derogatory word whether you know it or not. The words "retard," "gay," or “faggot” out of respect should not be a part of a punch line. Would you use the “N” word near a group of black individuals as part of the end of a joke? Check this link out r-word.org.
