MH ~ Depression & Suicide

Everyone occasionally feels blue or sad. But these feelings are usually short-lived and pass within a couple of days. When you have DEPRESSION, it interferes with daily life and causes pain for both you and those who care about you. Depression is a common but serious illness. Many people with a depressive illness never seek treatment. But the majority, even those with the most severe depression, can get better with treatment. Medications, psychotherapies, and other methods can effectively treat people with depression. Call 911, a SUICIDE hotline or get safely to an emergency room if you have thoughts of suicide, a suicidal plan or thoughts of harming yourself or others. If a loved one expresses such thoughts, it is okay to let them talk about it. By not talking about it, it becomes a "taboo" subject, so they may not go to you if they are at risk. If they talk about it, you can be sure that they have been thinking about it. Your doctor needs to be called right away if you hear voices, see things, smell things, feel things that are not there (psychosis which can accompany MDD; have frequent crying spells, if your work, school or family life is disrupted for two or more weeks; and if you or someone else thinks that you should cut back or stop drugs or alcohol. Side effects of some medication includes depression, but DO NOT stop taking it without talking to your doctor. For more than twenty years, I have worked in the mental health field in various positions. My goal is to earn my doctorate in clinical psychology. I am an advocate of informing other of mental health issues to help break down the stigma and misconceptions and help others to understand. THIS BOARD is dedicated to Depression & Suicide. Specific issues and diagnoses are on the boards for Feelings/Thoughts, Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder and Other Issues which are all on the boards near the top. Near the bottom of the page are boards that are specific to Self Injury, Eating Disorders and Sexual Abuse. Please take a look at the Mental Health Videos they are quite interesting and some very entertaining. If there are videos, some only display the description and the play symbol, but if you click on the play symbol it will play the video. Please check my board, Advocacy ~ Clothing & More for items that are available for purchase.

MeuAnjo Gee so true :(

This poster was based on a study done by a psychology student who suffered from anxiety and depression. She documented the subjects of her dreams before and after she began taking Zoloft. The silhouette represents the student, while the text represents different themes that appeared in the dreams. The colors seperated the before and after results of taking Zoloft.

Tips to Help Treat Depression

A Yale study recently found that perfectionism was related to the emergence of depressive symptoms largely because the perfectionists experienced negative social interactions and negative perceptions of social support and avoided coping actively with their problems. Meanwhile, research at the University of Manitoba in Canada found that the self-criticism that often accompanies perfectionism is what increases the risk for depression. “If you’re a perfectionist, you’re not going to be able to ...

My comment to this pin states, "This would have been funny if it said, "roadrunner" and not "person." Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death and is on the rise. A suicide attempt approximately occurs every 14 minutes or about one million per year. Approximately 39,000, die from suicide."

MeuAnjo Gee I love this..its so true.. ((hugs))

So true. I had a suicide attempt in high school. I got yelled at for being stupid while in the ER, saw a therapist once and no one ever talked about it or about how I was feeling or why I did it. After my attempt, my friends talked to my mother a couple of times because I was suicidal. She said, "thank you, but she is dramatic, too sensitive, but is just fine.

Rebecca Love Malia, it's okay. You're not alone. It's just a coping mechanism, that's all. Suicidal thoughts happen when your coping mechanisms can't keep up with your stressors. If you can increase the former, or decrease the latter, it'll help. Some self-love time (don't be shy or humble! you deserve love), talking to someone trusted, reading a good book; or maybe you can ask a friend to help with work, hire someone to help clean up a bit, something small like that. It's not simple, but simple things can help a bit. Take the time to take care of you, and if you need someone to talk to, I'm here and I won't judge. just lemme know if you need an email address (that goes for anyone who comments here too!).

Profile picture of Joan Redd

Joan Redd None of us will, Malia, we've all been there - at least thought of it! Some doctors are assh*les - and the one you encountered definitely was and doesn't deserve to be practicing! It doesn't sound like you have found the right therapist - or the right meds. Are you taking medication? It's a lot of work to find the right doc, medication, and form of treatment that helps one - and that's super-difficult when you're already feeling, as you say, hopeless. We're all here...

Profile picture of Coleen Uyehara

Coleen Uyehara Malia, yes we all have been there. It is not hopeless and neither are you. Joan is right medication, finding the right doctor and therapist is important for recovery. However, you can get better. Self-harm is an addiction, so it is cyclical. Tension/emotions - self-harm - won't do it again - guilt/tension/emotions - self-harm, etc. You can find things other ways of coping with your emotions. Hopelessness is part of your depression and addiction.. Yes,...we are all here...

Coleen Uyehara Malia, I noticed that you are following some of my mental health board. I also have some Therapy ~ boards at the end of my wall that you might like and find some encouragement.

Coleen Uyehara This didn't happen to me, but I found it on PostScret. Did you go throught the lawsuit. Mental health issues remain such a stigma and this is just one example. It is a dangerous one to, it is a time with these issues come out and people need help and to talk about it. With the tuition that is paid some of the money should go to serious mental health services...even public universities have them. I'm sorry for you stuggles with the school

Profile picture of Aliass Anona

Aliass Anona I got temporarily kicked out of the dorms for being anorexic. I hate the stigma.

Profile picture of Sarah Schmitt

Sarah Schmitt I did not have to go through with the lawsuit. The school dropped the issue. Because being a "Christian" school they are funded by doners and doners do not like lawsuits or discrimination. :)

Joan Redd I have depression, too, Colleen, but strangely enough, my SAD comes in August-September with the Autumnal Equinox - when the light starts going faster. I can endure the end of DST only because I know it's only 7 weeks until the Winter Solstice when THE LIGHT STARTS COMING BACK!!!!

Profile picture of Coleen Uyehara

Coleen Uyehara Interesting? I wonder what your body does or what circumstances change for you. If you are receiving treatment, does you doctor have and idea?

Profile picture of Joan Redd

Joan Redd My psychiatrist say this is not unusual and we are now aware of it. I've actually done some reading on this by a psychiatrist - it's not uncommon, actually - people's bodies respond differently. I'll see if I can find the title for you. Some people get it during summer because they hate the summer hot weather!

MeuAnjo Gee Quite the opposite actually. People with depression constantly see the good others do for them..But they just feel so unworthy to be given all that goodness..because they feel like rubbish..all the time.

Coleen Uyehara My therapist says that if it is possible to be depressed in the womb that was when my depression started. With some stops for major depressive episodes, but I know that I have a great life but it does always feel that way. Depression really sucks and I hate it when people tell me, "but your life is so great and you don't seem depressed." I'm 46 now.

Profile picture of Joan Redd

Joan Redd My God, how many times have I heard the same thing. I've also heard, "think how many things you have to be thankful for." Those folks don't seem to understand that those things don't seem to matter when you have depression -- they're like sips of water to a dehydrated person. As to the "you don't seem depressed" line, my comeback to that is the standard: "Better living through pharmaceuticals."

Profile picture of Coleen Uyehara

Coleen Uyehara Oh, that one really bugs me. Christians say that a lot. They mean well, but they just make it worse. Thank God I am a mature Christian who is able to just ride throught it. Sips of water or a bottle that you can't even see through. I love your comeback!!

Profile picture of Joan Redd

Joan Redd I grew up tall - I was 5'9" at age 12. You learn to develop a witty tongue to hold your ground against well-meaning relatives and smart-ass school-fellows at a young age.

Profile picture of Coleen Uyehara

Coleen Uyehara That is such an awkard age to really stand out. I'm assuming that you have quite a sarcastic tongue still. So do I. I'm only 5' 4." I had an early growth spurt and hoped that I would be taller, but that was it. My mother and aunt are the same height as I am.

Sharon Villagomez I saw an ad for volunteers for a suicide prevention hotline once and I started laughing. I imagined myself as a volunteer "If I were you, I'd have killed myself a long time ago". I don't think I'd be too helpful.
