Mental illnesses are medical conditions that disrupt a person's thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning. Just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas, mental illnesses are medical conditions that often result in a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life. Serious mental illnesses include major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and borderline personality disorder. The good news about mental illness is that recovery is possible. Mental illnesses can affect persons of any age, race, religion, or income. Mental illnesses are not the result of personal weakness, lack of character or poor upbringing. Mental illnesses are treatable. Most people diagnosed with a serious mental illness can experience relief from their symptoms by actively participating in an individual treatment plan. In addition to medication treatment, psychosocial treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, peer support groups and other community services can also be components of a treatment plan and that assist with recovery. The availability of transportation, diet, exercise, sleep, friends and meaningful paid or volunteer activities contribute to overall health and wellness, including mental illness recovery For more than twenty years, I have worked in the mental health field in various positions. My goal is to earn my doctorate in clinical psychology. I am an advocate of informing other of mental health issues to help break down the stigma and misconceptions and help others to understand. This board is dedicated to generally what it may feel like and the thoughts of those diagnosed with a mental illness. Specific issues and diagnoses are on the boards for Depression & Suicide, Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder and Other Issues which are all on the boards near the top. Near the bottom of the page are boards that are specific to Self Injury, Eating Disorders and Sexual Abuse. Please take a look at the Mental Health Videos they are quite interesting and some very entertaining. If there are videos, some only display the description and the play symbol, but if you click on the play symbol it will play the video.
...sometimes, it seems that numbing out and disconnecting from yourself is better than feeling. Such a powerful defense....not to feel.

feels like sexual abuse especially when it continues when you say "stop" or "no."

Coleen Uyehara I can see to comment on this, so I moved it over here: Leslie Ruggles I've always had a big issue with this...tickling is NOTHING like rape. Period.
Coleen Uyehara As a child, I was repeatedly raped and tickled as a child. I agree with you that they are NOT the same; however, they feel LIKE the same.
Coleen Uyehara Although some find this statement funny, I take this very seriously. Please, do not discount my feelings as well as others
Coleen Uyehara I appreciate your comments, please continue to make comments. Sorry that I had to move your comment over here for some reason that particular pin has a problem.
