I've collected sea otter stuff for as long as I can remember. I love them. I can spend hours at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California watching them!! Sea otters are different than river otters that are smaller and spend much of their time on land and can walk upright. Sea otters are on the endangered species list as thier population deminished significantly to due hunting for its fur which is the densest of all mammals. Their are one million strands per square inch which is why the spend a good deal of time grooming. The do not have any blubber, so damage to their fur coat makes them particularly vulnerable like oil spills. They range 40-100 pounds and need to eat 25% of their weight everyday. The are only able to have one pup per year which makes it possible for them to stay with their pup for 9-12 months. They are extremely devoted mothers. Sea otters eat at least 25% of their weight per day. A large group of sea otters is called a raft.
Tazo got this way when, as a young, needy pup, his every call was met by the humans who cared for him around the clock; holding and feeding him formula from a bottle, playing with him, helping him swim in his little bath, and monitoring as he slept in a crib made from plastic PVC pipes and an ice-filled air mattress. Just as mother sea otters care for their young in the wild, they encouraged his playing and swimming in a bigger tank as he grew — and now Tazo can dive to the bottom of his tank and pick up toys on his own, safely occupy himself, and is eating squid, capelin and whole clams without the shells.
