I've struggled with this for over 30 years and have been "sober" for 2 years. Yes, it is an addiction. It is also a defense against feelings and difficulty managing them. I have never cut my wrists only in places that no one can see. Phrases, words and pictures related to psychotherapy either personal or general. I have been in therapy for many years. I am also planning to apply to a doctoral program in Clinical Psychology...yes, even at my age!! Specific issues and diagnoses are on the boards for Depression & Suicide, Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder and Feelings/Thoughts which are all on the boards near the top. Near the bottom of the page are boards that are specific to Self Injury, Eating Disorders and Sexual Abuse. Please take a look at the Mental Health Videos, at the top of the page, they are quite interesting and informative. Some of the videos only show the description and the play symbol, but if you click on the play symbol it will play the video. Also, check out the videos at the top of the page for information on other diagnoses and symptoms. Please check my board, Advocacy ~ Clothing & More for items that are available for purchase.

"Therapy turned me into a cutter." From PostSecret I was a cutter before therapy. Then, feelings started to come up and my way of managing it was to cut more.

Anne W. :-(
Anne W. And hugs to her. ♥
Coleen Uyehara This one got to me...this is how I used to look all the time
Anne W. Then, hugs to you too, Coleen. My son used to cut his arms. ♥ I'm glad you are better.
Coleen Uyehara Thank you, Anne. I cut for over 30 years and haven't in over two years. The thoughts still come, but I can manage the thoughts and impulses and I know healthier ways of coping....doesn't mean I don't sometimes want that quick fix. It is just like addiction like substance abuse. We can also become addicted to behavior. I'm glad that you son is better. Thank you for the comments.
Always cover your scars...I never let anyone see them, even my husband. It gets better, but you need to talk to someone...stop covering.

Cameron Strange This whole board is emotional for me, but this one might be the most. If I didn't know better, I'd think this photo was taken of me. Thanks for having the courage to make a whole board like this. ♥
Coleen Uyehara When I first started talking about it on my blog then here, I had hoped that it would help other and myself even though it was difficult. I am three years free. I was actively engaging in a variety of self-injurious behavior for 30 years, the majority of time without treatment. I too that this looked like me as I always did it where no one would notice. Take care of yourself...It does get better even though you may feel worse first..hang in there

This is such a terrible place to be in. I've been sober for two years, but I remember the worst period of needing to cut through out the day at work just to get by. Then, I thought it would never end, but it did.

Self injury is addictive and dangerous. Please get help from a mental health professional. Recovery can happen. I've been there. I just have to manage the much quieter urges when I'm stressed.

Jeni Higgins agreed. i want help, but not from the people in my life. too judgmental.
Coleen Uyehara Help is out there. Many people misunderstand and make false assumptions. I you want help there are online groups and I needed psychotherapy. However, after 30 years of self-injury, I am three years "sober."

Jesse Myers The hardest urges ffor me aren't caused by an actual problem, it's when I miss the sensation, and the feeling of cutting.
Coleen Uyehara I know what that is like. It is sooooo tough, but with therapy and medications, I was able to stop after 30 years of cutting. None, in over three years.

Coleen Uyehara Thank you. Everyone. .I look at it as an addiction. I need to be mindful of the things that trigger and continue to learn and utilize new coping skills.
