A seven-year-old has donated $140 to the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center and the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC) because he doesn’t think it’s right for gay people not to be treated equally. The child, Malcolm, was given $140 by his parents to donate to the charity of his choice. He chose to split the money between the gay centre and the HRC. The cheque was accompanied by a hand written note that read: “I am sending you this money because I don’t think ...

Ordinary people. The courage to say no. The photo was taken in Hamburg in 1936, during the celebrations for the launch of a ship. In the crowed, one person refuses to raise his arm to give the Nazi salute. The man was August Landmesser. He had already been in trouble with the authorities, having been sentenced to two years hard labour for marrying a Jewish woman. We know little else about August Landmesser, except that he had two children. By pure chance, one of his children recognized her father in this photo when it was published in a German newspaper in 1991. How proud she must have been in that moment.

Sally Adebayo I find that people who have less are more willing to share.

Profile picture of Coleen Uyehara

Coleen Uyehara I agree. Sorry, but your comment makes me think of the politicians especially the 1/2 of Congress that is in the 1% and wouldn't give back the 3% decrease in salary that Bush made. As a social worker, we noticed the difference. In the lower income areas, people were just grateful that some came to see them and we had to practically push services on them that they could use. In the upper income levels, there was a sense of entitlement and what else can I have. Please remember that what I write is general and not all were that way.

Sally Adebayo Of course I was speaking generally as well, but I have seen it often.I think that when you know what it is like to live on the financial edge you often feel real empathy for others. If you've been hungry and you have a sandwich, you find it easier to share half with someone who needs it.Its a little harder for me to understand the thinking of people who have an almost obscene excess and their main focus it making that cushion ever larger. The rationale I hear from Republicans is that they believe they are the ones who create all the jobs,so the more money they have the more that will trickle down to the bottom of the heap. There are notable exceptions ie Bill and Melinda Gates,Jimmy Carter, Warren Buffet,et al,but it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle...

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords announced her plans to step down from Congress Jan. 22, 2011.

Wow. Kathmandu - "This powerful image of two vulnerable children living on what seems like the very edge of survival has won Chan Kwok Hung from Hong Kong the title of Environmental Photographer of the Year 2011. The photographer says: "The photo was taken in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal and is of two children who lived nearby to the junkyard with their grandmother. Every day they searched the junkyard for something useful that they can resell for money so they can buy food. If they don't find anything their grandmother blamed them seriously. Unfortunately, they had found nothing for a few days, the little boy felt very hungry. I gave them some money and a biscuit after taking this photo. But who knows who will help them afterwards."

This isn’t some tan girl covered in makeup with perfectly straight hair and a perfect smile. This is a girl with Pfeiffer Syndrome, who has had bangs her whole life to hide her forehead and struggles everyday to be okay with looking this way. She’s had several surgeries and will have a couple more. she can’t wear makeup much, her eyes are sensitive. Her jaw is misaligned. Her forehead is too thick and has to be shaven down. Her cheekdowns have to be moved forward by surgery. when she was four she had something called a ‘halo’ which was a metal circle screwed into her skull and jaw. though she fought through it medically, she struggles everyday with the emotional sideeffects. she doesn’t look like her family or her friends. she may never look normal. she has depression and eating issues because of what she has had to accept about herself. she has done awful things to be pretty. nobody ever sees her without makeup or without bangs. until now. She, is me. and if I make your blog ugly, than don’t reblog this. but if you can be one of the few people in my life who I know are fully comfortable with it, than reblog this so people know. you are beautiful. even if you don’t realize it, you are. everyone is, ~ Janice Prytz

The mother had cancer of the womb, and her uterus, including her unborn baby inside, had to be removed. This is a ten week old embryo, the photograph was taken by an OB/GYN med student in India named Dr. Suparna Sinha. I felt compelled to pin this purely to share how precious life is even at a mere 10 weeks into it's creation. Just..... wow.Powerful.

In 2004, 84-year-old Kenyan KIMANI NG’ANG’A MARUGE became the oldest primary school pupil in the world.  He said that the government’s announcement of universal and free elementary education in 2003 prompted him to enroll.  A year later, he was elected head boy of his school. In September 2005, Maruge boarded a plane for the first time in his life, and headed to New York City to address the UN Millennium Development Summit on the importance of free primary education
