A more streamlined life calls for design that employs modern technology, uncomplicated materials and natural colors that make our complex lives easier or at least seem easier.

"Gray is still an important neutral, but look to camel as the new emerging neutral of 2012," says my friend and fellow color forecaster Stacy Garcia and I have been singing this same tune.

A warm gray that works well with other neutrals. "A new gray, which goes along with the Belgian look of natural wood and natural linen. ~ Donna Schroeder, Color Designer for Dutch Boy ~ Cathedral Gray DT 136

When a room has a spectacular view, a neutral interior is the platform for a focal point that extends far beyond the walls of the room. This is true whether the view is of an urban skyline, majestic mountains, roaring ocean or a beautifully landscaped backyard.

For 2012/2013 neutrals are going slightly warmer but any color with a very low chroma can be included in this trends palette. Balance warm and cool the same way you would in any color scheme. The basics of good color design don't change just because the color is toned down.

When wood flooring is reclaimed or has the look of being previously used even if it wasn't, it has a softer quality that allows it to blend in as another neutral without calling too much attention to itself or instantly drawing your eye downward.

The new neutral schemes will mix neutrals with different undertones but when it comes to selecting the permanent elements in a room - backsplash, tiles, countertops, etc - using materials with the same undertone is important and still the way to go. Save experimenting with mixing neutrals with different undertones for other elements in the room.

The patina of reclaimed materials adds depth to a neutral scheme. Repurposing, recycling and reusing continues to be on trend and going more and more upscale as is shown with the zinc lamps constructed of reclaimed architectural elements.

From now through 2013 we will be seeing designers stepping up to the challenge of creating beautiful spaces with layered neutrals. For most people they need a "pop of color" to make the room come alive but a sophisticated blend of neutrals can stand on its own as long as the value and contrast are well thought out.

When using gray you can select a color like Ellen Kennon Full Spectrum Paints' Gustavian Gray, which will look more blue, green or gray depending on the lighting or you can find a color like Benjamin Moore's Horizon 1478 that doesn't move blue or green. It just depends on the room and what you are trying to achieve. I like the elusive quality of full spectrum colors but there are some situations where you might want a more one dimensional color.

Ellen Kennon's Full Spectrum Paints: Color Mushroom. "I'll do entire houses in Mushroom, which is pretty darned fabulous. It's a beige, but it changes drastically — one minute it's putty and the next, it's rosier. Chameleon-like and mysterious, it takes on the properties of the colors around it. You want to put your hand out and touch the wall because it doesn't look solid. It's almost cloudlike." -Ellen Kennon
