Linda Hessel She continues: "I STAND for every girl who was told that she couldn’t do something because she was fat and didn’t fit someone else’s ideal of perfect. I STAND for those who think they need to blend into the woodwork, try to fade into the woodwork, speak quietly and never draw attention to themselves. I say STAND UP AND CHEER! We are ALL FABULOUS and BEAUTIFUL and our weight and size do NOT determine our worth. We are SO much more than that! CHEER YOUR AWESOMENESS LOUD AND PROUD! Holly Sellers i don't understand this. I get that you want children to believe in themselves, but what i don't get is that it seems like teaching being healthy would be important, too. Being overweight at a young age leads to life long health issues. how about you teach them to stand for good health!!!???
Linda Hessel HAES *is* about health. :) The point of the project is that standing for good health doesn't mean standing against bodies that don't fit our current cultural beauty ideal. The idea that fat=sick and that thin=healthy isn't universally true, and shaming people doesn't make them thin. What it does do is increase bullying, self-hatred, and disordered behaviors in a population that is already at risk for these things because of culturally-based bigotry.

Linda Hessel Good nutrition and movement benefit *all* people, and lack of them hurt *all* people. Why target fat kids specifically then? Because of the myth that it is adipose tissue itself that is harmful. In fact, the research shows that "overweight" people fare better against most diseases than people of average weight, and serious health issues associated with weight aren't significant statistically except in the "morbidly obese" and -- get this -- the *slightly* "underweight" categories. Even then it is a very individual thing. For the vast majority it's not possible to tell just by looking at someone, or by the numbers on the scale, what their level of health is. The most important things that determine health are moderate exercise and nourishing food. And that is why someone can be fat and still live a long life and feel good while doing it.

Fetching pins…
Linda Hessel Kate, 16, writes: " As someone who was pretty heavy as a kid, I think about the way I would have reacted back then. I really don’t like the billboards about missing out on a childhood, looking bad, etc. I think that because of this ad a lot of people will start obsessing over their weight at a younger age. I agree with you that they should focus on healthier lifestyle changes instead."
Linda Hessel Virginia Sole-Smith writes: "Why do we need to point fingers at body types? Thin kids need to be eating well and exercising too. Everybody does. And fat kids don’t need to hear that their bodies make everybody uncomfortable. Chances are, they’re already hearing that on a daily basis — from kids on the playground, from family members, from the world — without a government-funded ad campaign to remind them." http://virginiasolesmith.co...
