I ran the San Francisco Marathon in 2004. During the first half of the race we ran across the Golden Gate Bridge, circled Vista Point, and ran back across. Make no mistake, the GGB is a hill!

This was the closest thing to a beach I had as a child. This sandy bank located at Lock 6 along the Kentucky River was the destination for many rural families in the 1960s. I remember riding in a power boat for the first time here.

When I was 9 or 10 my parents took me to Natural Bridge State Park. I thought it was the coolest place ever. I think I wore them out and scared the dickens out of them as I ran everywhere all day long.

Ran the Blue Angel Marathon in 2002. The best part was the 200ft low fly-by directly overhead to start the race. If you like flat marathons you'll love Pensacola. #marathon #florida #blueangels #pensacola

Our family (10 people) took a one week houseboat vacation on Lake Barkley, Kentucky in 2001. I like lots of vacation in my vacation. #lakebarkley #kentuckylake

I worked at the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Passenger Station from 1996 - 1999 in Huntington, WV. Just like Monopoly. I negotiated rail transportation contracts with large electric utilities like Detroit Edison and Consumers Energy.

Ritter Park in Huntington, WV is my favorite park for relaxing picnics...favorite park for running...and favorite park for playing.

Ran the Marshall University Marathon in 2006. Huntington, WV is a beautiful town. The best part of the race is that it finishes with a 100 yard dash at the stadium. They even hand you a football to spike in the end zone. #marathon

Mary Greer Gonna have to cheer for the herd this fall

My great great great great grandfather was Rev. James Quisenberry. He was one of the original pioneers at Fort Boonesborough in Madison County, Kentucky in 1775.

As a country boy from Kentucky, I had never even been a passenger on a sailboat. In 1984, I visited the Bayou Grande Marina on NAS Pensacola with the intention of learning to sail. It is well-protected cove and by trial and error worked myself up from a Laser dinghy, to an American Sloop, to a Flying Scot. It felt very grown up, though I'm sure I looked like a clown.

I ran a marathon as part of the Blue Springs Runner's 50m, 50k, 26.2m, 13.1m winter series on OCT 25, 2009 with 12 other runners. It follows the course of the Little Blue River through the Little Blue Trace Nature Reserve in Blue Springs, MO. Anna ran the Marine Corps Marathon the same morning in Washington, DC. The entire course was on soft trails. Easy on the knees, tough on the calves. Since some runners were running 50 miles we started on this shaded trail before sunrise. #marathon

November 8, 1989 my daughter Anna was born at the NAS Jacksonville Hospital. We worried about her because her heart rate kept racing up, but she turned out perfect.

I remember riding my bike down Hifner Road to a swimming hole on Clear Creek in Woodford County, KY. It was a country boy's luxury.

Growing up in Kentucky I suspect I handled tens of thousands of hay bales. The smell of cut alfalfa is etched in my best and worst memories. I only now appreciate fully the value of watching my parents model hard work and problem solving on those toughest days.

Surf fishing for pompano on the Fort Pickens National Seashore. I have never tasted a more delicious fish than fresh caught Florida pompano.

Ran the Pikes Peak Ascent in 2004. The feat is 13.32 miles and a 7,815' climb. The Ascent has an average percent grade of 11%. It took over four hours. It was 34 degrees at the start, probably 60+ about half way up and was snowing at the finish line. I was used to running hills, I just wasn't quite ready for this. It was perhaps the most exhilarating finish of any race I'd ran. The view is spectacular.

In 1985 I was in flight school at NAS North Island on Coronado, CA. We used to go to the Hotel Del Coronado for brunch on Sundays. I remember harpists in long gowns, french bread in the shape of full-sized animals (think alligators and roosters) and detailed ornamental ice so big you could hide behind it.

I could go to the National WWI Memorial and museum (Kansas City) a hundred times. "Once lead this people into war, and they'll forget there ever was such a thing as tolerance. To fight, you must be brutal and ruthless, and the spirit of ruthless brutality will enter into the very fiber of our national life, infecting Congress, the courts, the policeman on the beat, the man in the street." Woodrow Wilson, on the evening before declaring war on Germany

My family moved to Anderson County when I was 13. Our farm was directly across the Kentucky River from the Wild Turkey Distillery. I remember the smell of the corn mash cooking and the bourbon aging in the warehouses.

Ran the Great Floridian Ironman in 2003 in Clermont, FL. I had never swam 2.4 miles without stopping. I had never biked a full 112 miles in a single day. I injured my Achilles and didn't know if it would hold up for the marathon. My mother and sisters flew down to support me. Seeing them at the finish line was the best feeling in the world. Take that bucket list!

In 1986 I had a port of call to St. Thomas. It was a bit touristy so I took the ferry ride and short taxi to St. John's Trunk Bay. It is paradise like I have never since experienced. The National Park Service has even marked a 225 yard underwater snorkel trail from the finger of land that reaches out to the small island just offshore. I saw googobs of exotic fish, eels, sea turtles, and starfish. Others reported seeing rays, a small octopus, and nurse sharks.

I attended Mortonsville Elementary School from 1st through 8th grade in rural Woodford County Kentucky. I have strong memories of amazingly positive and sometimes tragic experiences. Mrs. Carter, Mrs. Ralph, and Mr. Jones changed the trajectory of my life. Words can't express my gratitude and thankfulness for their positive influence.

In 2011 Dana and I spent two amazing days biking the 'Katy' trail. The Katy Trail State Park is a recreation rail trail that runs 240 miles in the right-of-way of the former Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad. The nickname "Katy" comes from the phonetic pronunciation of 'KT' in the railroad's abbreviated name, MKT. It is the longest Rails-to-Trails trail in the United States.

In 1999 our family rafted on the Salmon River through the National Wilderness Areas of Idaho. It included class IV rapids, spectacular scenery and undisturbed wildlife. I remember watching a bolder the size of car careen down the canyon wall into the water in front of us. It sounded like thunder. It was my favorite family vacation.

I worked for CSX in the mid to late 90s. At that time they owned the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulfur Springs, WV. As a reward they often sent employees and their families for long weekends. We golfed, hiked, shot sporting clays, hunted with falcons, and indulged in the spa. It is still far and away the best accommodations I have ever experienced. #amazingvacations

When I was 10, our family drove to Mammoth Cave National Park for two days of tours. At that point it was the biggest adventure of my lifetime. I had read everything at my hometown library about these caves. Nothing prepared me for the enormity and length of these caverns. With over 390 miles of passageways it is by far the world's longest known cave system, and over twice as long as the second-longest cave system. I was especially proud it was in my home state of Kentucky.

Went on a sunrise run at San Bruno Mountain State Park in 2005. The San Francisco fog blew across the ridge, at a surprising speed. The trail took me directly into the wind and the fog raced past me, I had the sensation that I was running 20-30 mph. It was surreal.

The only time I ever saw a tornado was in Haifa, Israel. During that storm my crew and I navigated ten foot seas in this harbor aboard the admiral's barge. Wave's washed over the deck, sometimes hitting us waist-high as night fell. Easily in the top five scariest moments of my life. Side-note: Once ashore I traded Zippo lighters to motivate local officials to organize a helicopter flight and escort for the admiral's safe trip ashore. ;)

Went to Super Bowl XXVIII January 30, 2000 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia. Went with my friend Ray wearing huge ram headgear. The Rams (16–3) defeated the Titans (16–4), 23–16, to capture their first Super Bowl win and first NFL championship since 1951. Best sporting event I ever saw in person.

The Pete Dye Course, home of the 2010 PGA Championship, is carved into the southern Indiana hillsides. In 2001 I took Aquila customers to the PGA school at the French Lick Golf Resort and we spent a week here getting lessons and playing this world class course.

Joan Redd I remember when this was built and when this was torn down to make way for Great American Ball Park.

In 1993 I went to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia while attached to Joint Task Force South West Asia. Jeddah is the principal gateway to Mecca, Islam's holiest city, which able-bodied Muslims are required to visit at least once in their lifetime. It is also a gateway to Medina, the second holiest place in Islam. At the time the U2 reconnaissance plane from the RSAF Air Force Base in Jeddah. The U-2 dates back to 1955 and specialises in intelligence acquisition, flying at the edge of space. It has a range of some 6,400 miles, can operate at over 70,000 feet and flies missions lasting up to 12 hours. Its single turbofan engine powers it up to around 500 miles per hour. I was really surprise to see the space suits they had to wear in flight.

Lived at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard at the end of Broad Street from 1990-92 while getting my MBA at the University of Pennsylvania. This place is where our Navy and Marine Corps started.

This is how Mount Etna looked from our plane. We detached to Naval Air Station Sigonella, Sicily in 1985. The maintenance crew lent my torso harness to a VIP passenger for a public relations mission. He was much smaller than me so they had to tighten the straps to fit him. The next time I flew I couldn't strap it on because they had made it so much tighter. I was embarrassed because I thought I had gained 10lbs eating Italian food.

In 1985 I rented a 35' sailboat with 3 friends to sail along the coast of Majorca, Spain. The island was full of small inlets just like this. We drank way too much sangria.

Deployed to conduct aircraft carrier operations in the tight Norwegian fjords in the mid-1980s. Flying through the fjords at night at 200 ft were some of the most nerve wrecking minutes of my life.

Visited the Bay of Fundy in 1989 on a detachment to Nova Scotia. As one of Canada’s ecological wonders, the daily flow of water fluctuates from seabed to the height of a four-storey building every 12 hours.

Sailed through the Suez Canal in 1987 and in 1993 on the USS Nimitz and USS America respectively. I was shocked to see wrecked tanks and assault vehicles destroyed in the Yom Kippur War along the banks.

Jeff Small VA-165 Boomers. I was going the opposite way on the USS Kitty Hawk. I believe our ships were switching coasts because the Boomers (CAG-9) were deployed to the Nimitz once it arrived on the West Coast.

Port of call to Ipanema Beach, Brazil (June 1987) with USS Nimitz. Stunning scenery. Had a reverse no-menu meal whereby we paid in advance and restaurant owners kept bringing us delicious food and drinks until we begged them to stop.

In 1993 I visited the 'Tree of Life' in Bahrain while deployed to support the Joint Task Force Southwest Asia. It was blistering hot and it looked like the lunar surface in every direction except for that resilient tree.

I was so excited to visit the Giza Necropolis in Cairo, Egypt when I was 22. I anticipated feeling alive...feeling a part of the history of the world. I did. I learned, however, a very important lesson. Witnessing something special, even a wonder of the world, is somehow empty without friends and loved ones to share the experience. #Cairo #Egypt #pyramid #giza
