I really like the color the island is painted as a possible wall color for the kitchen, when we redo it.

Felt Details Add life to a dull shade by adhering sticky-back felt details available in crafts and scrapbooking stores. To create a scattered look, start with larger embellishments at the bottom, and mix smaller stickers into the spaces.

The Fix If you're lucky enough to have a dedicated broom closet, make sure that the space is working overtime. First, "reroute things like sewing projects or unused appliances to other locations," Samuels says. Next, install individual broom and mop hooks or strips with multiple wire shelving holders to hang on the inside of the closet. If there's an outlet in the closet, install the Dust Buster there. If not, look for a convenient location near an outlet where it can be mounted on the wall so that it's charged when you need it. Now that these items are organized, use shelves or cubbies to store paper towels, light bulbs, batteries, etc. "Grouping them in open, labeled bins makes them easy to find," Samuels says. Keep the floor reserved for empty cleaning buckets and, of course, your vacuum.

The Fix Like most of the other storage spaces in your home, linen closets usually suffer from having too much stuffed in them: sheets, towels, toilet paper, comforters you haven't used in years. Not only does that make navigating the closet tricky, having too much un-aired, unused stuff in there can make everything smell musty. So, take stock. You really only need two sets of good-condition sheets for each bed in your home and a reasonable amount of towels, Samuels says. Wash and donate everything else—including pillowcases, which seem to multiply. "Get rid of errant pillowcases, keeping one or two for trick or treating," she says. Then roll the towels you have left to take less space, stack the sheets by size, and keep nonlinens together in bins or boxes.

Mess #2: The under-the-sink cabinet The Problem "Between my garbage can, my cleaning supplies, and all the plastic bags I try to recycle, I can't find the sponges." The Fix For many of us, the under-sink cabinet is like a dark hole, harboring all sorts of mysterious things. When you reach in there for the dishwasher soap or a sponge, you're just as likely to come up with a scrub brush you haven't seen for a month or a handful of plastic bags. A good cleaning out is the only way to reassert your control over this space, the experts say. For starters, attach an over-the-cupboard door grocery bag organizer to rein in the plastic bags. Next, move out anything that's not related to cleaning the dishes or the kitchen. (You really don't want the oven cleaner next to the kids' lunch bags or the dog food, for instance.) To keep cleaners, sponges, and dish soaps upright (everything seems to tip over in this space), stowl them in baskets or bins. "You never have as much space as you need in this cabinet, but that's okay if you use the space efficiently," Pollack says.

In a small space, use a tiered table or bookshelf for pretty colorful storage. Try placing your favorite bath salts in a glass jar and displaying fragrant soaps.
