Haven't read this yet, but looks to be an interesting book. Met the author in a forum.

Grammar matters. This made me laugh.

All too true.

Carolyn Howard-Johnson Sadly, yes. It's not inspiration I lack, though. It's time! Thanks for the repin, Donna.

Other ways to say "said."

Carolyn Howard-Johnson Donna, thx for repin. I have trouble convincing students who have been trained not to repeat words that it is best not to use these, but rather learn techniques that avoid tags. And when in doubt, to just use "said" rather than drive your readers crazy (and take them out of the story!) with too much verb cleverness in tags. (-: BTW, more tips like this in my "The Frugal Editor: Put Your Best Book Forward to Avoid Humiliation and Ensure Success."

Donna Shepherd I have used some of these before, especially in my children's writing where a more active word works. I think balance is key. Even the word 'said' can end up being a distraction if used too much. Using a more colorful word on occasion can add spice to the dialogue. But as you said - showing, not telling is key!

Carolyn Howard-Johnson And, I think, children's literature can get away with these "other-than-said" tags better than fiction for adults.

..and writing.

This would be fun to do before a book signing. Cut squares of newsprint larger than nails. apply a base coat of polish. when nails are completely dry, soak them in alcohol, then press newsprint on nail and slowly pull off. Top coat to seal.
