Jeanne Toussaint 1920's - director of Cartier’s luxury jewelry department from 1933 until she retired in 1968. Toussaint explored different motifs: animals, patners, dragons, chimeras, flowers, and her favourite of all, birds (parrots and flamingos were a particular favourite) - all inspired by the exoticism of India, Persia, and the Far East.

Trompe l'oeil wool sweater, by Elsa Schiaparelli, French, summer 1928. The increased interest of the couture in sports fashions designed specifically for the beach and seaside was reflected in the popularity of nautical themes in clothing for summer and resort wear. The concepts were easily adapted to knitwear, and for fall 1929 Schiaparelli included the trompe l’oeil pullover, based on a French sailor’s middy, with its collar extending across the back of the sweater.
