I've decided I'd like to get serious about learning to brew, enjoy, and understand perfect coffee and espresso at home. Any new quest demands some serious toys.
Bodum Pebo Vacuum Coffee Maker ($80). Thanks to its unique vacuum brewing method, it extracts all the flavorful oils in your coffee without changing or hiding the flavor with a metal or paper filter, and seals in the aroma so every pot smells as fresh as it tastes.

PROPER COFFEE COLD DRIP: "We've seen some long brewing times before, but 12 hours seems a little excessive, even for cold drip. Yet that's the brewing time for the Proper Coffee Cold Drip ($400). Promising a smooth, flavorful cup of joe, the Proper Coffee brews at a glacial 43 to 47 drips per minute, 1000ml at a time, through an all-glass system of reservoir, filter funnel, and bottom vessel that's elegantly suspended by a water jet-cut aluminum frame."

Rattleware 7-Inch Espresso Machine Brush, with Drip Guard $10 (Keep your group head screen clean!!). UPDATE: Have it, love it. I'm now cleaning my group head/screen more often because it's so easy. The stiff bristles seem like they won't wear out anytime soon.

"Airscape" by Planetary Design: the inner lid travels down the length of the tin allowing you to minimize the air trapped in this air-tight canister. Pretty clever solution, if you ask me! $25

4.5 oz Gibraltar Glass: perfect for cortados. Sadly, I can only find these in bulk (e.g. $65 for 36)

Steven McGaughey oh I found out that cortado doesn't exist around iowa city. however a wet macchiato seems to be well understood.
Geoff Dudgeon Similar texture/size?
Steven McGaughey yeah its pretty close. again its always a random amount but its good regardless.
Geoff Dudgeon Now that I'm making them at home, I find that the cortado (or rough equivalent) is a good way to get my caffeine without drinking a ton of whole milk.
"POKAL" Glass (Ikea): a cheap alternative to those hard to find "Gibraltar" glasses for cortados. $2.99 for 6.

Adrianne Silver this is the best kind of coffee! I bought my drip filter for about $2, though, and it works just fine!
Maja A Agreed, this is my favourite too. Second Cup has done this for decades too - they call it "The Perfect Cup" and you can request it at the store if it's not busy. They weigh, grind and brew the beansjust for your cup.

mintas fotos Always wanted to try one of these.....this one is really pretty too!
Steven McGaughey how well to do this work @Geoff Dudgeon?
Geoff Dudgeon @Steven McGaughey Still mulling it over. About to buy a grinder :)
Rebecca Silbermann @Geoff Dudgeon which grinder did you choose?
Geoff Dudgeon @Rebecca Silbermann: I think we're going with the Breville Smart Grinder (http://bit.ly/wWVOVn); I just don't think I can justify a Rocky (when the actual espresso maker is going to be so pricey).
The Bodum Bistro Pour Over Coffee Machine ($250), aims to replicate the tedious yet tasty pour over process. It uses a spiral heating element to get the water as close to boiling as possible before transporting it over to the fine-mesh, titanium-plated coffee filter. It then passes though a shower head to ensure even distribution, while the filter lets through all the flavor and none of the grit. Finally, the double-walled thermos ensures the stuff stays warm, yet still opens with a simple press of a button.

Manic coffee in Toronto makes a mean latte. I'm happy anytime I find Intelligentsia coffee on a menu, and the high standard coffee geekery of this place didn't disappoint (overheard, between baristas: "oh, you'll really need to re-steam that; it's too thick.").

There are several variables involved in making awesome espresso. The Espro Calibrated Tamper is design to remove one of these variables, the tamp pressure. It works by giving the barista a 30 pound force feedback. When 30 pounds is applied to the grounds, the tamper makes a subtle but satisfying click.

Bon Appetit's DIY Cold Brew Coffee Recipe: "Morrisey recommends using a lighter roasted coffee with a higher acidity rather than a darker, more bitter roast for a "luscious, soft, and supple" result. The resulting flavor and body of a cup of cold brew is the exact opposite of what you get in a cup of espresso."

The Breville Dual Boiler is the business! For only $1,185 you get a ton of features you'd only expect to see in a commercial product: programmable pre-infusion, PID temperature control, and most importantly: two boilers so you can brew and steam at the same time without dorking up your pressure or brew temperature. Amazing. SCG has a great video walk-through here: bit.ly/vscQZi
