@Heidi Van Natter "Now when I set out a station, I simply review the task with the kids. We decided on what the simple instructions for the task should be. I quickly flip these little babies over and record the directions. Then if the students get to the station, but forget the task, they can press the button and hear them again."

genre tickets...kids rip them off as they read each genre. Or maybe use them of punch cards?

Students change their card when they finish a book. Completed card gets added to their ring....they work their way to 40 books.

pocket chart organization : "The activities are stored in vinyl zippered pencil pouches and have a color picture showing the activity in the window of each pouch. The kids can easily see how to do the activity and where to put it back. "

"password of the day" sign. I found this idea on ProTeacher. You can hang this by your classroom door and have the kids read the "password" whenever you leave the room for lunch, recess, etc. The passwords can be sight words, spelling words, important vocabulary. These could work perfectly!

I put an absent folder on my absent student's desk. The students at their table will make sure they get all of the work we do that day put in their folder. I do check their folder at the end of the day and make sure there are not tests or activities that can only be done whole class. Then, when that student returns the next day, they put their folder in their backpack. The instructions to the parents are on the folder.
