Christy Mathewson, pitcher, New York Giants, by Paul Thompson, 1910 Photograph by Paul Thompson shows Christopher "Christy" Mathewson, pitcher for the New York Giants, head-and-shoulders portrait, facing front. Handwritten on verso: "Mathewson of N.Y. Nat." Dated 14 December 1910, Christy Mathewson is an inaugural member of the Baseball Hall of Fame and one of the most celebrated pitchers of the deadball ear. His probably most astounding feat was to pitch three complete game shutouts in the 1905 World Series against the Philadelphia Athletics. All five games of the Giants' 4-1 win ended in shutouts, and Mathewson pitched the majority of them. Christy Mathewson died in 1925 of tuberculosis, an illness he had contracted during a training exercise in World War 1. Mathewson's primary catcher for the Giants was "Chief" John Tortes Meyers. Saltair Pavilion, Great Salt Lake, Utah, 1901 53809. Saltair Pavilion, Great Salt Lake, Utah. Photochrom print by the Detroit Photographic Co., copyrighted 1901. The Saltair was a family place, intended to provide a safe and wholesome atmosphere with the open supervision of Church leaders. While some of the other resorts in the area were seen as "spiritually bleak," a young couple could visit Saltair without worrying about the gossip in the early days when Mormonism was more culturally conservative than it is today. Train schedules from Saltair to stations near home were well known, and so long as the boy got the girl home at a reasonable time after the train arrived, parents weren't worried -- in part because, from the moment of arriving at the station before the outing until they left the station coming home, they were usually never out of sight of trusted members of the Church. More than once, a couple on the way home found themselves in the same car as their parents, who themselves had been dancing at Saltair. Drucilla Strain, Ziegfeld girl, by Alfred Cheney Johnston, ca. 1929 Ziegfeld girl Drucilla Strain, half length, facing right. The (sadly rather carelessly handled) LoC photo description page gives the date as ca. 1920 and her name as Drucilla Straine, but it seems like Strain and 1929 are closer to the truth. Very little other info on her that I could find, except that she peformed from 1929 to 1946.
