The beautiful black and white portraits taken by photographer Traer Scott, depict the emotions and personalities of the shelter dogs she has spent time with while volunteering. The portraits have been compiled in a book entitled “Shelter Dogs,” with a percentage of proceeds donated to the ASPCA.

Sheila Rollins I believe this runt piglet was abandoned by the mother and this Ridgeback is now taking care of it.
Linda Potter love it, we humans could learn a thing or two
She had just finished with a litter of her own, who are now 10 months, so I thought there was a chance she might take on the duties of looking after her. “Katjinga is the best mother you can imagine. She immediately fell in love with the piggy. Straight away she started to clean it like it was one of her own puppies.

A giant farm dog and a tiny piglet cuddle up as if they were family after the baby runt was dismissed by its own mother. Surrogate mum Katjinga, an eight-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback, took on motherly duties for grunter Paulinchen – a tiny pot-bellied pig – and seems to be taking the adoption in her stride.

Kathy Hanegraaf We had a male dog who took in a orphaned litter of kittens. He would clean them and let them suckle. We had to give them the milk but he gave them comfort. His name was Spot. He also used to climb trees...hey maybe he was part cat.

Lady the golden retriever was 81-year-old Parley Nichols’ constant companion for six years, and the dog stayed by Nichols’ side even as he developed dementia and began to lose his memory. When Nichols went missing in Ohio on April 8, 2010, so did Lady, and the police spent a week searching for the pair until they found the canine and her owner in a field. Nichols had died of heart failure, but Lady never left his side, staying alive by drinking water from a nearby creek. The loyal dog didn’t ...

In January 2009, 10-year-old Maxim Kurguzov was playing outside his Russian home when a fox wandered into the yard, killed one of the family chickens and then turned on the young boy. Then Shrek, the family dog, gallantly leapt in front of Maxim and fought off the fox with several bites to the head. Upon hearing the commotion, Maxim’s father, Alexey, grabbed his son and began snapping photos of his fearless dog, which engaged in a 25-minute standoff with the fox.

On Sept. 11, 2001, Omar Eduardo Rivera, a blind computer technician, was working on the 71st floor of the World Trade Center with his guide dog, Dorado. Thinking he wouldn't make it, the owner unleashed his dog so he could have a chance to escape. The dog, Dorado, and a co-worker then helped Rivera climb down 70 flights of stairs, which took nearly an hour. Soon after they escaped the tower, the building collapsed, and Rivera says he owes his life to his faithful dog.

After an earthquake and tsunami hit Japan on March 11, the media was full of tragic news as well as amazing stories of survival. One such survival story centered on a dog that stood guard over an injured canine on a debris-strewn beach. Although the dog was extremely protective of its wounded pal, rescuers were eventually able to calm the him and get the injured pup to a veterinary clinic. The loyal guard dog was then taken to an animal shelter.

Hidesamuro Ueno brought his dog, Hachiko, to Tokyo in 1924, and every day when he left for his teaching job, Hachiko would stand by the door and watch him go. Then at 4 p.m. the Akita would arrive at Shibuya Station to meet his owner. A year later Ueno died of a stroke at work, but Hachiko continued to return to the train station at 4 p.m. every single day, searching for his owner’s face amid the slew of passengers getting off the train.

Hawkeye the Labrador retriever is proof that dogs, too, suffer from heartbreak. During Navy SEAL John Tumilson’s funeral on Aug. 19, Hawkeye ambled up to his owner’s coffin and dropped to the ground with a heaving sigh. Tumilson’s cousin, Lisa Pembleton, snapped this photo of the devoted dog and posted it on her Facebook page, and the heartbreaking photo was soon shared around the world.
