We are witnessing the largest mass extinction since the end of the dinosaurs. That humanity is at fault is beyond question in serious scientific circles, and it is our duty to save what species we can, both for their sakes and ours. Global Animal: http://www.globalanimal.org/
A team of scientists from the Denver Museum of Science and Nature have announced the discovery of the almost perfectly preserved skull of an extinct species of giant Bison at a dig site nearly 100 miles west of Denver (Colorado).

There are two species of chimpazee: the common chimp and the Gracile chimpanzee (also called bonobos). Both are classified as endangered, due to habitat loss, poaching for the bushmeat trade, disease, and capture for the illegal pet trade. In 1960, the estimated population of chimps was around one million individuals. Now, their numbers have dropped dramatically to only 172,000-300,000 remaining–a decline of 70-83% in only 50 years.

claw of a pangolin. According to the IUCN, virtually no information is available on population levels of any species of Asian pangolins. These species are rarely observed due to their secretive, solitary, and nocturnal habits, and there is not enough research on population densities nor the global population.

Pink Galapagos Land Iguana Only discovered in 1986, the pink iguana is still up for debate among scientists; it’s not clear whether it is distinct enough to be classified as a separate species. Regardless, it is highly endangered — pink iguanas only exist on one volcano in the Galapagos, and there are fewer than 100 left alive.

A flightless, nocturnal bird endemic to New Zealand, the Kakapo is the only parrot that exhibits either of these traits. Despite conservation efforts going back to 1891, only 90 birds remain (so few that every single one has been named). Extensive recovery plans were recently put in place, and its population has been steadily increasing.

There are plenty of untamed horses roaming the plains of North America and Australia, but they are the offspring of pack animals. Przewalski’s horse is the only true wild horse left, having never been domesticated. After becoming extinct in the wild in 1969, its captive populations from zoos around the world were cross-bred to increase genetic diversity. Sixteen were released in Mongolia in 1992, and since then, their population has grown to about 250.

After being hunted to near-extinction, devils were protected in 1941 and began to bounce back. In the past decade, however, a mysterious and contagious cancer has wiped out entire populations. Causing horrific facial tumors, the disease eventually leaves the animals unable to eat or drink. The Tasmanian government and conservation agencies are taking steps to halt the spread of the disease, lest the devil go the way of the Tasmanian tiger (or thylacine).

Bactrian — or two humped — camels, are used all over Asia as domestic beasts of burden, but in the wilds of the Gobi Desert they number fewer than 1,000. Though they live in areas completely inhospitable to humans, their survival is threatened by mining and the exploitation of oases.

This is an extremely rare, highly endangered small wild cat which is only found on the island of Borneo. It wasn't until 1998 that live Bornean Bay Cats were actually photographed, so very little is known about them. They grow to around 22 inches in length, and vary between 5 and 10 pounds; it's likely that like most other types of felines, the males grow much larger than the females. They hunt at night for birds, rodents, and sometimes monkeys. They appear to be related to the Asian Golden Cats, yet have a very different structure to their skulls, and of course are much smaller in size.

click to read informative article about how coral reefs help save rain forests and help global cooling: blog.enn.com/ Dr. Graham Jones of Australia’s Southern Cross University believes that coral reefs produce a volatile substance called dimethylsulphide or DMS which oxidizes in the atmosphere to produce cloud condensation nuclei. He adds that, “water vapor cannot form clouds without these tiny aerosol particles being present.” DMS is produced by the live algae in the coral tissues and it is produced on a daily basis. This part of the research shows that coral reef-produced rain may actually feed rainforests along Australia’s northern coast.

Coral reefs exist in only two percent of the world's oceans. The diversity of life in a coral reef is second only to that of the tropical rainforest. Coral animals are ant-sized relatives of jellyfish that produce protective limestone habitat for multiple species of fish and other organisms. The world's coral reefs are being greatly impacted by environmental degradation and human misuse. Coral bleaching, overfishing, abusive fishing techniques, anchor damage, algae blooms, global warming and fish feeding are some of the problems affecting the natural balance of our reef systems today.

Green Sea Turtle population declining. Unfortunately, honu (greens) are suffering from a disease called fibropapillomatosis. This herpes-family virus causes the growth of white to blackish, cauliflower-like tumors. These grow on the soft tissues of the turtle’s body, internally and externally, and inhibit foraging, breathing, mobility and digestion. It is unclear what causes this disease, but research is ongoing worldwide to find a cure.

Critically Endangered. (and blamed for eating fish!) Fewer than 600 Mediterranean monk seals exist and they are one of world’s most critically endangered marine mammals. Their decline can be attributed to industrial development and the establishment of resort areas along the Mediterranean Sea- but fisherman have also played their part in causing such low numbers. Illegal shooting occurs very frequently because seals are blamed for eating all the fish.

Two baby monk seals rescued! (Jan 2011) The two pups separated from their mother would badly dehydrated when discovered. After 48 hours of crashing into rocks, their bellies, jaws and flippers were also badly injured. They were finally discovered in Bozyazı and Kaş and have since been nurtured back to good, sound health. They are two of only 100 seals left in Turkey.

A rare and beautiful sighting! (Washington, D.C., May 18, 2011) A unique and mysterious guinea-pig-sized rodent, not seen since 1898 despite several organized searches, bizarrely showed up at the front door of an ecolodge at a nature reserve in Colombia, South America. The magnificent red-crested tree rat (Santamartamys rufodorsalis) stayed for almost two hours while two research volunteers took the first photos ever of a creature the world thought would never be seen again.

Went from Endangered to Vulnerable! :) The Arabian oryx, which not long ago nearly vanished forever. The last wild antelope was shot in 1972. But captive breeding and reintroduction efforts have rebuilt a wild population of at least a thousand individuals—moving the animal from “endangered” to the less serious “vulnerable” category. “This is proof that conservation really does work,” Miller said. “If it’s intelligently designed and done well, it can really pay off, and we can see recovery of species that were on the brink of extinction.”

Critically Endangered. Harlequin Toad: One of Only Two Known. Photograph courtesy Alessandro Catenazzi Nineteen new frogs, toads, and salamanders were added to the Red List this year, and eight are said to be critically endangered—including Peru’s harlequin toad. Extensive surveys of the toad’s forest habitat in 2010 turned up only two individuals. Amphibians are one of the hardest hit animal groups, with an estimated four in ten species at risk of extinction from threats including habitat loss, pollution, and disease.

Critically Endangered. This tiny, critically endangered bog turtle, Clemmys muhlenbergi, is one of the world’s smallest, squeezing into a 3- to 4.5-inch (7.9- to 11.4-centimeter) shell. But the eastern-U.S. reptile represents a big conservation problem. Wetland development and drainage have drastically reduced suitable habitat for this and many other species around the globe. U.S. turtles, like C. muhlenbergi, are far less threatened than their Asian relatives, but their fates are increasingly bound together: Asia’s appetite for turtles as food and the pet trade is harming turtle populations halfway around the world.

Critically Endangered. The Chuj climbing salamander, a species of dwarf salamander from Guatemala, is another addition to the critically endangered category of the 2011 Red List. The salamanders are found in a limited area of hardwood forest, much of which has been cut for farming and firewood. But local authorities are also working hard to protect a remaining stretch of forest where the amphibians still thrive. “It’s a classic example of how humans impact biodiversity around the world,” Miller said. “We have the power to destroy—but also the power to protect.”

Critically Endangered. Could you eat this? A critically endangered species is defined as a species at extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. The Siau Island tarsier, for example, inhabits only one small Indonesian island dominated by an active volcano. “Depending on the magnitude of the eruption and the path of the lava flows, the population could be severely affected or even possibly disappear,” said Rebecca Miller, program officer for the U.K.-based Red List Unit. The big-eyed primates also face immediate pressure from islanders who have both degraded nearly the entire tarsier habitat and hunted the animals extensively—wiping out perhaps 80 percent during the past decade. “There are credible reports that the locals regularly eat them and may serve five to ten in a single sitting,” Miller said.

Rachel Huffman Moore My all time favorite prosimian and a distant relative of humans. So sad. They are truly amazing little animals.
Critically Endangered (because humans eat caviar) The beluga is the largest sturgeon and the largest European freshwater fish. The beluga sturgeon is the source of the delicacy, beluga caviar, which is the eggs or roe of the sturgeon. It is estimated that one female sturgeon may be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars for her caviar. Unfortunately the fish must be killed in order to retrieve the eggs. Overharvesting has caused nearly a ninety-percent decline in beluga sturgeon populations. The trade in beluga caviar is worth some 100 million dollars annually. The United States is the biggest consumer and buyers pay around 450 dollars for a 125-gram tin of these precious salted sturgeon eggs.

Vulnerable. A smaller wild cat...About: The black footed cat is one of the smallest species of wild cats and similar in shape to the domestic cat. The fur is brownish with a pattern of round black or dark brown spots. It has a large head relative to the body. It has two black stripes across each cheek with pale area between the stripes. There are two black stripes on the forelegs, and up to five on the back legs. The soles of the feet have black fur to protect them from the hot sand. The tail is about half the length of the head and body. The cat is found in the dry parts of South Africa. Feeds on small prey such as rodents, birds, spiders, insects. They catch their prey by stalking and pouncing on it. They sometimes scavenge on larger dead mammals. The conservation status in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals for this cat is, sadly, “vulnerable”. Found: Botswana, Namibia, South Africa.
