Writers' inspiration board

It takes countless images, snippets of language, and unexpected associations to make a novel, memoir, essay, or short story. Here, a gathering of ephemera and esoterica, for the writer in all of us... I put the apostrophe AFTER the "s" in "Writers," because I hope other writers will be inspired by these found objects as well.

Jane Austen's notebook, "Volume the First," containing Austen's early short works. "Austen wrote in a ready-made bound blank-book and completed the transcript when she was seventeen. The manuscript was bought for the Bodleian Library through the Friends of the Bodleian in 1933 and was first published in an edition by R. W. Chapman (Oxford, 1933)." The first book that inspired me: Me and My Flying Machine, by Marianna & Mercer Mayer..."It would be something magnificent, smaller than an aeroplane but bigger than a truck..."

What can I say? Mark Wahlberg inspires me. I once saw him in an outdoor cafe at the corner of Amsterdam and 84th Street, right by my apartment, in the summer of 1999, the day before I left New York for San Francisco. And I thought, I am leaving this town WHY? Oh, Marky, how can it be so wrong when it feels so right?

Nabokov's notecard: before it was Lolita, it was a lot of words on a lot of notecards. Read this great essay by Tadaki Wakashima, "Double Exposure: The Vertigo of Translating Lolita: www.libraries.psu...

When you can't write, make ice cream! From the Library of Congress: "A passionate gourmet, Jefferson acquired a stock of standard French recipes for sauces, fruit tarts, French-fried potatoes, blood sausages, pigs' feet, rabbit, pigeons, and various other dishes. Among the most popular of these recipes at Monticello was this one for vanilla ice cream--written by Jefferson, with his own recipe for Savoy cookies to accompany the dessert on the back."

Can't write? Bike until the words come.

Don't know where this is going, but I feel as though I could fall right in...very beautiful and eerie in a black hole sort of way.."Brooklyn-based artist Shane McAdams creates abstract paintings from ink extracted from ball-point pens. The body of work focuses on the often dueling relationships between natural and synthetic forms, illustrating through process the phenomenon of elemental forces incrementally sculpting a land over time."
