I lived on the big island of Hawaii from January, 1970 through June of 1974.
The Palace Theatre in Hilo, 101 Dalmatians and Swiss Family Robinson circa 1973
These were a staple in Hawaii. I always loved them.

Papaya trees were fairly easy to grow, as I recall. The fruit was delicious.

"Are those REALLY clouds, way down there? If so, we're up pretty high," says my 9 year old self.
"Strawberry Guava" also grew around the mother's house in HPP. Usually in shady areas, the cherry-like fruits were delicious!

Guavas grew wild around the mother's house in rural Hawaii. I'd routinely pick and eat them. Delicious!

One of the homes in HPP in 1979. The lava terrain is how I remember it.
Makuu Drive. This was a gravel road back in the early 1970s. I walked to and from the bus stop along this road to 31st Ave.
Beach Road was an overgrown road when I was on it.
Mauna Kea in the background. Not sure what street this is.
Pahoa, Hawaii, the small town where I went to school from 1970-74.
The field where I hated to play dodge ball.

Petroglyphs at Pu'u Loa. My class took a field trip to this site. As I recall, I wasn't all that impressed.
Hapuna Beach. Although this beach is on the Kona side of the island, we went there a few times.

Pahoa-Pohoiki Road to Isaac Hale State Park. I remember the road but not the park.

Plumeria Flowers. These smell wonderful and as I recall these aren't difficult to grow in tropical, frost free gardens. Sometimes we would string the flowers into leis.

Bayshore Towers. My grandmother lived in one of the condos on the first floor. We used to ride the elevator, swim in the pool and play billiards in the rec room.

Mauna Kea above Hilo, the largest city on the east side of the island.

Ohia lehua. As I recall, Hawaiian legend said that picking this flower would cause Madame Pele to cry, in other words, rain.
The sign points the way to the subdivision where the house was located.

Kilauea crater was not that far from our house in Hawaiian Paradise Park. At night we could see the red glow if it was erupting.
