Many anatomy engravings of the period depicted corpses having both scientific and metaphorical or philosophical meanings, hence the thoughtful pose of this skeleton, a memento mori as well as an anatomically accurate depiction of the bones.

Bernhard Siegfried Albinus is best known for his Tabulae sceleti et musculorum corporis humani, which was published in 1747, largely at his own expense. The artist with whom Albinus did his work was Jan Wandelaar.In an attempt to increase the scientific accuracy of anatomical illustration, Albinus and Wandelaar devised a new technique of placing nets with square webbing at specified intervals between the artist and the anatomical specimen and copying the images using the grid patterns.
