Hope for Lonely Rodents: Rent-A-Guinea Pig Service Takes Off in Switzerland. (The Swiss law that makes owning a single guinea pig illegal is well intentioned but could use, I feel, some fine tuning. Still, this solution is far better than the "guinea pig loop" the law otherwise mandates, and this woman seems to be taking care that the rental rodents have good lives, considering.)
“In his five short weeks of life, Orbit hasn’t met many other owls. So he isn’t at all worried that his new best friend doesn’t hoot back. The orphaned chick is perfectly content in the company of the stuffed bird perched next to him and is never far from his side. Orbit, a common barn owl, was given the toy by Lyndsey Wood, his carer at Folly Farm, near Narberth in West Wales. She said: ‘A friend suggested that I find something like a toy owl to stop Orbit feeling lonely. I thought he might try to eat it, but he just cuddles up to it and goes to sleep.”

So, about 15 years ago, I wanted to write a book called The River Otter's Wife. Then everyone wrote books called The X's Wife or The X's Daughter. (And everyone made movies called Xing X.) Also, I only had a title - no story. But now I have a cover!
