New York City — For us here at LIFE, it’s the place we call home. From the countless images of the Big Apple stored away in its unparalleled archives, LIFE here presents a small selection of classic black-and-white photos that show off the the spirit, the architecture, the culture (high and decidedly low) of Gotham — visual testaments to a city that, through darkness and in light, remains one of a kind.

Granville-Paris Express wreck on 22 October 1895. The original Gare de l'Ouest name of the station is visible on the outside of the building. The Gare Montparnasse became famous for a derailment on 22 October 1895 of the Granville-Paris Express that overran the buffer stop. The engine careered across almost 30 metres (100 ft) of the station concourse, crashed through a 60-centimetre (2 ft) thick wall, shot across a terrace and sailed out of the station, plummeting onto the Place de Rennes 10 metres (33 ft) below, where it stood on its nose. Two of the 131 passengers sustained injuries, along with the fireman and two conductors. The only fatality was a woman on the street below who was killed by falling masonry.[4] The accident was caused by a faulty Westinghouse brake and the engine drivers who were trying to make up for lost time.[5] A conductor incurred a 25 franc penalty and the engine driver a 50 franc penalty. The story of the train crash and the picture feature in the 2007 children's novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. For the film version, Hugo, the crash was detailed as a nightmare the main character was having. It was re-created using a detailed quarter-scale model by technicians at New Deal Studios.

Lea Michele left this message under the dressing room table at the Eugene O’Neill Theater after her run as Wendla Bergmann in Spring Awakening on Broadway, the role she originated. This photo was taken by the dressing room’s new occupant Andrew Rannells, who plays Elder Price in The Book Of Mormon, the show that is currently playing at the O’Neill. Under the title of the show, Lea wrote “I Believe”, a title of one of the songs from Spring Awakening. Coincidentally, Andrew Rannells sings a different song titled “I Believe” in The Book of Mormon every night at the same theatre.

"St. Marks and Avenue Something." by Zachary Johnson. My brother Seth sat out in the garage with me tonight, playing old Tom Waits songs on his guitar and smoking cigarettes while I painted. We shared a bottle of his whiskey, and it was my favorite night spent painting in some time. Any painting’s gonna be a hell of a lot better if you’ve got your brother playing Fannin St. by your side.

Umbra Fish Hotel Let's be honest: your fish probably doesn't care what his surroundings look like, just so long as his water is clean and he's well fed. But you have to look at his bowl/tank every day, so you might as well make it stylish. The Umbra Fish Hotel ($35) certainly qualifies, featuring the clean, boxy lines of a modern home, a glass bowl, an ABS pastic facade, and a stackable design that lets you build an entire condo full of fishy friends.
