Panansonic DMP-BDT310 3D Blu-ray DVD player $205 This slender box has built-in Wi-Fi, so it can reach many of the services that Apple TV can (but not iTunes). It also comes with a Webcam and software to allow you to make Skype video calls from your TV. Oh, it is also a Blu-ray DVD player, and a 3-D one at that when used with the proper discs and eyewear. For added fun, the top of the Panasonic ($205) has a sensor that knows when you wave your hand over the top of the machine and opens or closes the disc tray. There is absolutely no functional benefit to that feature, but it sure looks cool.

JOBY'S GORILLAPOD FOCUS. $74.53. As invaluable as they are for countering image blur and enabling steady exposures, there are occasions when carrying around a full-sized tripod simply isn’t practical. For this reason, an lightweight alternative which can be slipped into a small bag and used with similar confidence is going to have a lot of appeal - and the Gorillapod Focus is exactly that. Based on the same principle as the more junior models which preceded it, the Focus has flexible legs which can be contorted into an endless variety of positions, and tailored to the surrounding environment. It can be wrapped around railings and lampposts, hung from rails and mounted on walls, or simply have its legs fully extended to act like a more conventional tripod. It might sound a little risky, trusting your expensive gear to something that looks like a cross between pipecleaner and an alien craft, but Joby claims that despite its size and appearance, the Focus’s aluminium and thermoplastic construction enables it to support up to 5kg of equipment. For even greater flexibility, the Focus can be used with a ballhead specifially designed for the model - dubbed Ballhead X - which is available on its own or as a kit with the Focus (this kit is pictured here). Those who don’t require the Focus’s 5kg support may be more interested in the SLR-Zoom model, which is capable of supporting DSLR/lens combinations of up to 3kg, but at around half the price of the Focus.

Eames Aluminum Lounge Chair. It's always a little scary when someone sets out to update an undeniable classic, but in this case, we think it turned out okay. First introduced in 1958, the Eames Aluminum Lounge Chair ($1,600-$2,350) recently got a slight refresh, as it's now available with a graphite or white powder-coated frame and white or black Spinneybeck Vicenza leather upholstery. Otherwise, it's still sporting the same sleek design, four-star base, and sling seat that's made it an icon of design.
