I was blown away by the insensitivity and bigoted nature of a colleague's prejudices he very confidently expressed today. I decided it was better to express my anger in a less "high cost" arena. Franky I want to punch him in the nose... instead I shall pin... and hope it wakes others up. If you would like to be a childfree contributor to this board please get in touch. Submissions should be enlightening or humorous. PLEASE NOTE - YOU DO NOT KNOW WHY I DON'T HAVE KIDS. When you assume you a make and ass of yourself. I will deploy snark in self defense. The question was - can a person without children be trusted to be a "steward of the future."
Amazing way of displaying an important message

BIG government up in your uterus - As featured in tonight's segment on Virginia's pending law to require transvaginal ultrasounds of women seeking abortions, commemorative vaginal probes like these could one day be collectors' items should Virginia governor Bob McDonnell join the Republican ticket as the vice presidential candidate in 2012...
Genius meme on reproductive and religious freedom...

Before you push people to have kids because you did, or you think it will "make them better people" or "make them whole" consider the fact that many are too broken to be good parents. Abuse does not mean you can't be a good parent...but chances are without help you may repeat the pattern. Some stats: An estimated 81% of all offenders are under age 40. Overall, approximately 61% of perpetrators are female, although the gender of the abuser differs by the type of mistreatment. Neglect and medical neglect are most often attributed to female caretakers, while sexual abuse is most often associated with male offenders.

Maturation of the Prefrontal Cortex The prefrontal cortex, the part of the frontal lobes lying just behind the forehead, is often referred to as the “CEO of the brain.” This brain region is responsible for cognitive analysis and abstract thought, and the moderation of “correct” behavior in social situations. The prefrontal cortex takes in information from all of the senses and orchestrates thoughts and actions to achieve specific goals.1,2 The prefrontal cortex is one of the last regions of the brain to reach maturation. This delay may help to explain why some adolescents act the way they do. The so-called “executive functions” of the human prefrontal cortex include: Focusing attention Organizing thoughts and problem solving Foreseeing and weighing possible consequences of behavior Considering the future and making predictions Forming strategies and planning Ability to balance short-term rewards with long term goals Shifting/adjusting behavior when situations change Impulse control and delaying gratification Modulation of intense emotions Inhibiting inappropriate behavior and initiating appropriate behavior Simultaneously considering multiple streams of information when faced with complex and challenging information The PFC is not developed until AGE 25. Most of us have our first kids before age 25. This brain region gives an individual the capacity to exercise “good judgment” when presented with difficult life situations. Brain research indicating that brain development is not complete until near the age of 25, refers specifically to the development of the prefrontal cortex.

Seb Paquet what does this have to do with childfree?
Liz McLellan I prefer not to be specific.
Jonathan Kozol (born September 5, 1936 in Boston, Massachusetts) is a non-fiction writer, educator, and activist, best known for his books on public education in the United States. You would be hard pressed to convince me that you care more about the kids and their future than this man. Don't know his work? Hard to be a steward of the future and be ignorant of him.

Liz McLellan Very cool! thanks!
I imagine she might have liked to have kids... Thank goodness her children turned out to be literary masterpieces.... Jane Austen didn't have kids. Don't know why...Not at all important.

To breed or not to breed? That is the question twenty-eight accomplished writers ponder in this collection of provocative, honest, soul-searching essays. Based on a popular series at Salon.com, Maybe Baby offers both frank and nuanced opinions from a wide range of viewpoints on parenting choices, both alternative and traditional. Yes: "I've been granted access to a new plane of existence, one I could not have imagined, and would not now live without."—Peter Nichols No: "I can sort of see that it might be nice to have children, but there are a thousand things I'd rather spend my time doing than raise them."—Michelle Goldberg Maybe: "As we both slip into our mid-thirties, my own personal daddy dilemma has quietly taken on an urgency that I frankly didn't expect."—Larry Smith From infertility to adoption, from ambivalence to baby lust, Maybe Baby brings together the full force of opinions about this national, but also intensely personal, debate.

What happens to kids in foster care? Sometimes it works out great. A lot of time the child develops PTSD. It's a crap shoot. Before you have a kid consider seriously not having one.

This is but a tiny representation of kids in jail across the planet. These kids are refugees. They have parents. I figure if I ever want kids I can surely find some little person who needs me. Birthing babies doesn't make you better.
