Pawson, a British architect whose projects range from a London cake store to a Czech Republic monastery to a Madrid hotel, had never designed for the stage. But his minimalist approach proved an excellent match for McGregor’s aesthetic. The two chose to create detail and texture through color—a color that might be freedom from white, but it’s not far off. The only color is in the lighting, and even that is “all versions of white,” says McGregor.
