Slab Creature. Throw a slab, cut out an 8" circle, keep the scraps for extras like; eyes, teeth, tail, etc. Use some plastic grocery bags to hold the center form as you bring up the sides like a taco. Score and slip the top and then use your imagination. Have fun.

from original pinner: Found this on Flickr. Apparently the ceramic teacher's name is Janet Burns (I always attempt to credit the artists and instructors.) In any case these are the cleverest little pinch pots. I'm thinking kids of all ages would enjoy and feel successful at making one of these! Pinch pot, add details, then acrylic paint, and embellishments! FUN!

Kids use fingers to create textured scales on alligators and crocodiles. First they roll a cylinder and shape the head. Then they add some legs to the bottom. We usually add legs early in the process of most of the clay animals we make. That way the animals can be flipped over and the kids can concentrate on the top details. Two parallel rows of finger pinches are created down the back.

Josette Brouwer C Mae, wish I knew - tried to track it back, looks like the blog is no longer working. Sorry.

Clay cutter allows you to cut 20 identical slabs of clay in 10 seconds. Art teacher bought hers at Runyans Ceramic Supply in Flint, MI (but I bet you could get elsewhere)

Fetching pins…
Shannon Gibbons i did something similar to this with my kindergarteners. We talked about chinese new year and then we made dragons the same way. They LOVED it and they came out really cute.
Josette Brouwer Cool! I think it's time to try something different with my kinders - besides pinch pots - this looks like a good project.
