Tunicates, such diversity!

a colony of free floating tunicates known as salps. Unlike most other tunicates salps are not anchored to the sea floor however they feed the same way. By pumping water through their bodies they are capable of filtering out food and also providing locomotion. Salps are also used as a model for the starting point of vertebrates as structurally their basic nervous system and structure can be thought of as a primitive backbone.

This photo, taken on August 3 and released by Australian Department of Environment, shows a cluster of vividly fluorescent coral in daylight found in waters off Lord Howe Island, 600 kilometres off the east coast of Australia. Australian scientists have discovered that the brilliant shallow-water corals could provide vibrant illumination for cancer research.
