The Hatepe or Taupo eruption around the year 180 CE was New Zealand's largest eruption during the last 20,000 years. It was one of Earth's most violent eruptions in the last 5000 years. The resulting ash turned the sky red over Rome and China.

Many, many tonnes of oil and many large containers were spilled into the ocean, creating a maritime disaster unlike anything of this nature seen before.
