visit the Mark Twain Cave, Missouri's oldest show cave.  The cave was discovered in the early 19th century.  In the late 1840s Hannibal doctor Joseph McDowell used the cave as a laboratory for his experiments with human corpses, including his 14-year old daughter.  Families from Hannibal would picnic in and near the cave to take in the natural air conditioning.  In 1876 two kids got separated from their schoolmates and spent several days in the cave trying to avoid a homicidal injun.  Jesse James laid low in the cave after robbing a cave in 1879.

- callheralaska - I did go to the blog where this is from I think that's why I'm confused. I know that it's sort of a thematic tour, but the Hannibal Doctor story is in fact true, so is the Jesse James story, so it seemed like the story of the two kids was written as a part of the cave's actual history as well. I tihnk I must be missing something, right?

justenoughsalt "a local teenager spouting cave history and facts as well as unfunny jokes" is not a reputable source in my humble opinion. however, joe the gent that writes whatabouttheplasticanimals takes his research seriously. if you comment on his post i am sure he would give you a better explanation.

Profile picture of - callheralaska -

- callheralaska - Ah, I see now. I didn't know that Joe was borrowing the wording straight from the kids' tour-guiding. No, that would not be a reputable source at all. Joe's other stuff is full of irony and wit, so I imagine I read this way too literally (pun absolutely intended). Either way, thanks for responding!

justenoughsalt no worries! whatabouttheplastic animals is one of my absolute favorite reads.

- callheralaska - I'd never heard of it before now, but have been perusing it since. It's pretty rad!

Every year for a few days in the month of February, the sun’s angle is such, that it lights up Horsetail Falls in Yosemite, as if it were on fire.

David Cabassa That is breathtaking.

This woman has a journal for each of her children, filled with letters to the child and thoughts about them. She started each one the day they found out they were having (or adopting) the child.

take a swim in The Devil’s Pool, a small lagoon, enclosed by rocks, on the edge of one of the biggest, most beautiful waterfalls in the world, Victoria Falls. Set on Livingstone Island, at a height of 103 meters, Devil’s Pool is definitely one of the most surreal locations on Earth.

Sam Pryor It's also the #5 most dangerous body of water in the world, I've read. And you can only do this during certain months. Pretty crazy. I suggest making it one of the last items on your list! :-)

visit Homestead Crater in Midway, Utah and is definitely a very unusual yet exciting swimming hole. The pool itself is crystal clear and accessed via a 110-foot tunnel. If you’re a scuba enthusiast, you’ll really enjoy this warm water experience as you explore the chamber’s sides.
