Brinker acknowledged in February she “mishandled” the recent controversy and “made some mistakes” after the organization’s initial decision to stop giving funds to Planned Parenthood was announced. Brinker established Komen on behalf of her late sister Susan Komen.

Per Nancy Schwartz Komen fail continues. Now 3 weeks later they've hired reputation consultants to see if/how an apology should be shaped. Read this article to see the (negative) seeds they're planting as they do so rs and media outlets played it for real. Crisis communications #101 talk about your brand and future, don't fan the fire of what went wrong. Honestly at this point I just don't understand it. It's organizational suicide.

Sa M thanks @Beth Kanter This situation continues to amaze me. Over and over again they make decisions and take action based more upon "politics" and less about mission!
Beth Feith Bypass Komen- donate directly to Planned Parenthood.
Komen has hired a consulting firm that specializes in messaging strategy to essentially ask its donors: Do we still owe you an apology? Answer: YES!

Janet Fouts from google.com
Annie Potter Who's Susan g komen
Sharon Morris Thrasher So it is more important to support abortion than it is to support breast cancer awareness?
Janet Fouts This isn't about abortion for me. Planned Parenthood is about women's health including screening for breast cancer. Only a small percentage of PP locations even conduct abortions. I haven't supported Komen in the past either because I don't know where the money goes. I give my money to other orgs that support outreach, support and action, like Breast Cancer Action.
@Komenforthecure We're thinking of you alright....

We do not want our mission marred or affected by politics—anyone’s politics.” That’s exactly the fallacy—that somehow women’s health can be narrowed to an apolitical and innocuous agenda. Women’s bodies are the most politicized sites on earth. When women focus on a hyperfeminine aesthetic at the expense of issues of substance, we end up with a hot pink ghetto of goodwill that forfeits the conversation about rights, access and money to the menfolk.

Jill Jaynes You need only look at the hate spewed in the other pins on this page and the pin itself to see where the shame is.
Jill Jaynes The bit of "truthiness" that has not been shared with you is cited below. You see apparently SGK's "choice" not to fund PP was met with an outpouring of donations from PP's supporters-rightly so. But no, PP continued with the shakedown of the SGKomen foundation. I would like to contribute all of my tax dollars that are "not going to abortions" to this endeavor as well. PP has a billiion dollar -yes, you heard that right a billion dollar budget to operate within. They would rather malign and destroy an organization that has only done good for women than to raise the "missing funds" they would not get. Breast exams and screenings are about 1% of what they do. You see, "choice" is only theirs, and not to be extended to anyone else. You are met with vitriolic rhetoric and personal attacks. It really is so transparent and clear. http://www.cnn.com/2012/02/... After Komen's initial decision to cut off some funding, Planned Parenthood said money from the foundation has largely paid for breast exams at local centers. In the past five years, it said, grants from Komen have directly supported 170,000 screenings, making ...
Amanda Edwards Jill: Thank you so much:-)
Sharon Morris Thrasher So what I am hearing is abortion rights are more important than breast cancer support? Or am I hearing this correctly?
Sharon Morris Thrasher Because we all have to know that the money is NOT just used by PP for breast exams, come ON!

On Sunday, Komen is expected to use the hashtag #supercure on Twitter during the Super Bowl, the NFL being a sponsor of the organization. Kanter and others are hoping that activists will flood the #supercure hashtag with retweets that include another tag, #takebackthepink, to make the argument online that Komen has politicized the issue of women's health, has indicated that it is a nonprofit that opposes abortion, and has "betrayed" its donors by failing to be honest and transparent about internal politics that this group suggests Komen has had all along.

Jedediah Swartz It should be pointed out that the card says "Own your politics! Are you pro-choice or not?" and then the comment encourages women to basically protest that Komen "politicized the issue of women's health". The hypocrisy in assuming this is abortion related and then complaining about "politicizing" anything should be obvious.

Judy Nelson Whatever the Komen Foundation does, you have to give them credit for astonishing marketing skills in bringing breast cancer to the top of the awareness pile.
“We used to march in the streets; now we run for a cure.” Barbara Ehrenreich, author and social critic. Breast cancer has become the poster child of corporate cause-related marketing campaigns. Countless women and men walk, bike, climb and shop for the cure. Each year, millions of dollars are raised in the name of breast cancer, but where does this money go and what does it actually achieve? PINK RIBBONS, INC. is a feature documentary that shows how the devastating reality of breast cancer, which marketing experts have labeled a “dream cause,” has been hijacked by a shiny, pink story of success. The film recently celebrated its World Premiere at TIFF, where it was named one of the TOP 10 Films. It opens in Canadian theatres on February 3, 2012.
