Western lowland gorillas are critically endangered, their population dropping to about 30,000 from 100,000 due to an Ebola outbreak. A population of 125,000 were recently discovered in the Republic of Congo great news, though they are still vulnerable to poaching, habitat loss and Ebola. The birth of this baby gorilla is an important event; his paternal grandparents were wild-caught, so his genetics are very valuable to the western lowland gorilla species in North America.

"As Mother's Day approaches, we bring you this picture by a British photographer who has travelled the world photographing the special bond between mothers and their children in the animal world. Elliott Neep's pictures capture a variety of creatures sharing heart-warming moments with their offspring, such as this cheetah and her cubs in Kenya. Mr Neep, who lives near Wantage, in Oxon, said: "These pictures shows that the bond between mother and her young stretches across the species, you don't often see it with the males. It's such a great rush to experience these moments, to see it with my own eyes. I'm very lucky."
