Lincoln campaign rally in Springfield, August 8, 1860. Adhering to nineteenth-century custom, Abraham Lincoln did not actively campaign for the presidency. But, he did make local appearances. In this 1860 photograph, he is wearing a white suit, standing next to the front door of his home. Relatively unknown outside Illinois, Lincoln benefited from having his image widely circulated on campaign materials, like The Railsplitter.

Coin purse, 1909 The centennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth was celebrated in 1909 with the minting of the Lincoln penny and special festivities in Springfield, Illinois, and elsewhere across the country. This handbag may have been a commemorative souvenir from that year.
